There are a couple of openings on the transmission case where you can watch things operate. On the top left you can see the clutch slave cylinder plunger pushing against the release fork. If you have someone work the clutch pedal with their hand you can watch the slave cylinder operate. Through the bottom of the transmission you can see if the release bearing is hanging up because of corrosion, etc.
