Arrow Dodged a Bullet today ! I think....

I took my newly acquired 96 to the dealer today - first time I drive it since I bought it due to dangerous tires - to get a baseline service (not much prev history so I thought I'd start fresh) and buy some parts...

The advisor pulls up my car's info to get me the immobiliser code (it's full of zeros and 9s, If it fails I'll be turning my key 37 times, #$$#$% damn it), and then looks at me and says "you are sooo lucky"... huh ? Turns out the car had been serviced at that dealership before - lucky me as I had zero records - and apparently the PO shelled out $4000 last year to do a common fix on 96s, something to do with a port getting blocked with carbon buildup, where they have to tear a lot of stuff down to enlarge it or something like that (air valves or something?).... Phew... anybody knows what he was talking about? Anyway, seems like I dodged a bullet on that one. I guess the PO gave up on the car after this expensive repair and the fact that the temps were still wrong (he did not know about this list and the defective ballast resistor, ha !)...

Net result for me: the dealer agreed to print me all the service history (names blanked), was super friendly getting me all the codes I needed without requiring my title or anything, and I got to chat with the tech assigned to my car, super friendly people... (Reeves in Tampa)

While I was there I used my certificate to get $100 off for all I needed: A spare DME relay, a spare oil cooler relay, 2 ballast resistors (parts guy looked at me asn said "only one?", a spoiler wall, and 2 engine lid shocks ! Turned out she needs the harness recall as well, so they're going to have fun doing tires, brakes discs, pads and flush fluid, harness, clutch pedal adjustment, AC belt and an oil change for good measure - all before the Sebring DE on Saturday.. Here's hoping ! I'm another day and 1/2 away from driving my first 993 in anger for the first time - this is killing me ! ;-)

Looks like you found yourself a good OPC...or at least a good guy in the service dept.

He was referring to the carbon buildup issue of the air injector passages. When this happens your CEL (cash emptying light) will light and a fault code will be triggered which will cause issues wrt emission inspections. Best way to prevent this in the future is with regular use of Techron and frequent "Italian tune-ups". Do a search and you'll see just how expensive a bullet you just dodged! <img border="0" alt="[cheers]" title="" src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" />

Greg:

Lucky you. The carbon buildup activates the CE light. It is an emmissions thing. People are working for an alternate, less expensive solution. Basically, at startup, air is forced into the engine to make it run lean. About two minutes later, it shuts off. Carbon builds up over time. It sucks.

Wow... the service advisor was not lying when he said it was an expensive bullet!

On the other hand, since this is not a california car, I probably would have done the electronic workaround.... well, I guess I got a decent set of valves then.

Even though my car needs tires, brakes, clutch and a couple of resitors and belts, I still think it was a decent deal at $33K (incl. a decent trade in for the 986) for a 1996 with 40K miles and new valves! The body is flawless... I almost feel bad taking it to the track (almost). Ironically, if they can fix all of this in time, I'll arrive at the Driver Event with all of 3 hours driving experience in my car! Needless to say this is gonna be good for slower car's egos, because I will definitely take it easy until I get to know the car better!

True ;-) But I also have brand new tires (green) and brand new brakes, so maybe I'll take it easy 2 laps!!! ;-)

It was a great deal IMHO.

You did dodge a nice bullet with the CB blockage. That should indicate that the car was not driven really hard and spend its life doing city work mostly, considering the relatively low miles of the car. When you check the archives you will find a lot of good info about this matter and what to do to try and prevent it.

Dont forget to take out the engine undertray since you live in a hot climate which should help with the longetivity of your lifters and provide better cooling for your engine.

Welcome to the board! <img border="0" alt="[bigbye]" title="" src="graemlins/xyxwave.gif" />

To answer the last 2 points... Thanks for the undertray advice, I knew it was a to-do item on 964s but I wasn't sure about 993s. Will do, that way I can see if the car leaks oil more easily anyway ;-) Does that lose me any ground effects? ;-)

Re: the price.. Well, considering all the work to do on the car (brakes, clutch, tires + what I'll do myself), It's already a 37/38K car really... so it's not bad price wise but not an incredible deal either... but I am not complaining, I have waited long enough to get a 993. Now 2 more days at the dealer and she's good to go...
