Steve,
Is it detrimental to use Techron or VentilSauber between oil changes - not just immediately before the change? Thanks for all of your input.

Hi Steve,
Thanks for all your advice on this issue. I appreciate it, and apparently my early ’95 is immune. I’m sure the OBDII owners are even more appreciative. I have another question. My car has an air pump; I saw it when my engine was out and I can hear it on startup. If it doesn’t have these passages in the heads, where does it pump the air?
Thanks,
Tom

That's a great question Richard, I'd been refraining from using extra Techron between oil changes & would love to know if I'd be better off using it more often as well!

Brainiac Steve Weiner better answer this one, but I'll take a shot (with many caveats...).
It's my understanding that the chemicals in the additives can dilute the oil, mess with viscosity, and effect the heat carrying capacity of the oil. In addition, I often wonder if any of the carbon removed by said product finds its way into the oil. Damn--Wish I was a chemist, this is interesting.

Thanks for the pointer, I'd missed that thread in April
Steve's post is pretty far down the thread - for anyone's convenience, here it is:
"Tom speaks volumes of truths here,.....
I've recommended an oil change after Techron treatments in cars that have never used Techron before and/or Factory recommended oil change intervals.
Tom is right on the money,....if you change your oil as frequently as one should, then you may simply use Techron 3-4 times a year with no worries.
FWIW, the amount of Techron already blended into the fuel is inconsequential, and will do little toward the control and prevention of carbon accumulation on the valves and injectors.
Oil changes are much cheaper than a proper overhaul. "

Hi Tom:
I was mistaken,...your '95 does have the passages in the cam towers & heads, as this is where the pump sends air into the exhaust port, just behind the exhaust valve.
This applies to US OBDI vehicles, not ROW ones.
As we do not do any repair or maintenance work here, I don't know if '95s are less susceptable to this problem across the board or not. It might just be my perception, but it seems like the OBDII cars have seen more problems than their predecessors. This might also be due to differences in the overall numbers of these cars.
On another note,....thanks to everyone who helped answer the question about how often one can use these fuel additives. You guys saved me the work to answer that,........you're hired!!
BTW, for the folks using LubroMoly, instead of Techron,..you need to use both LubroMoly products; Ventil Sauber & Jectron. These items are complimentary, not exclusive, to each other as they perform different and overlapping things. Just my opinion but I think both products used together are more effective than Techron.
Its not a deal-buster due to availability, but when given the choice of one or the other, the LubroMoly gets my nod.

There are at least two different Techron AFAIK (and I am not talking about Techron and ProGard) on my local Autozone shelf. One is the cheaper one ($4.99) fuel injection cleaner and the other it the more expensive one ($5-6) engine deposit cleaner (or something in that line).
The fuel injection cleaner is recommended every 3000 miles and the engine deposit remover every 10,000 miles (I might be mistaken on the miles).

Bad karma. Read this post last night, and on the drive home my check engine light came on. Well, at least I knew what might be the reason for the light comming on. Arrrrrrrrgh!!!!!

Gosh, I went to all the trouble of creating a fake username and posting this message, and not a single person had a response to it. I'm surprised that no one else thought of that old Roger Matthau movie when they read 'carbon on the valves'.
Bah!

Then you must not have pulled up the 'Ruf PSS-9 Suspension Query' thread yet.
