Angry Targa Problems

Was driving do the highway when upon hitting a bump I was greeted with a loud snap as the sunshade on my targa (1996 993) snapped out of the track and rolled itself up. Its the second time its blown apart on me, but this was much more impressive and concerning. I took the car into a dealer who was about to proceed with a $700 parts order and $700 of labor before I stopped with an array of expletives.

I've looked at it myself and it appears the tracks are fine and the mechanism works correctly. The faulty part appears to be the links between the rolled up shade and the sliding arms. One both sides is L shaped piece with a pin-like link to attach to the moving arm and two small nubs to attach to a slide in the track. It appears these nubs have sheered off thus causing the system to misalign and come apart. Has anyone had a similar experience and solved it with the replacement of these two parts (and the guides for them in the tracks - one of which appears to be missing)? Any thoughts on the part numbers or source thereof? $1400 for a silly shade is a bit insane - particularly when the glass reflects most of the radiant heat; but having a non-functioning part on a porsche is the start of how things deteroriate.

I'm also having a problem with the leather on the headliner rails (the ones which the roof sits in) delaminating where it wraps over. Any thoughts on fixing these (was going to use plastic/fabric epoxy) or what they might cost if they're even available?

Thanks for any help. This is a great board.

Jay,

Sorry to hear about your targa top. With regards to your headliner, I used crazy glue liquid/pen for my 993's and it has held through the last 3 years. Porsche sure skimped on the glue department with these. Hope this helps.

Jay,

(Mandatory tribute to Ray) There is some good info in the manuals.

If you don't have the manuals, You can susbcribe to an online service called Alldata DIY for $25/yr. AllData Do It Yourself

They list all of the TSB's that have been issued for your car. There are a bunch of TSB's for the Targa top that list specific procedures and part numbers. You may find the info there. I really like this service...it has wiring diagrams and much of what is in the manual at a GREATLY reduced price.

I have the parts CD so if you need me to look up a specific part, just email me.

Good Luck!
