reverse gear crunch
just a few days ago, i encounted a very unusual problem with my gear box. i haven't driven the car in 3 days.
the car (1995 c4 cab) started normally, but when i tried to engage the gear into reverse, there was a
grinding noise and it refused to engage into reverse. i waited a couple of seconds and tried again. i got the same
results 'cruuuuunnnnch'. on the 3rd attempt (about 15 seconds after the 2nd attempt), it finally clicked into reverse
albeit with a little difficulty.
i'm a little concerned since the car has extremely low milage (30k miles) and i rarely push the car hard. i have also never taken the car onto the track. so i've been quite perturbed by this.
i've not taken the car into the dealer but would like to monitor the situation further. after that grinding incident, i haven't
dared force the gear into reverse. a local mechanic told me to engage it into first and then into reverse and this seems to be works.
but this seems strange since its in good shape and driven 2-3 times a week.
i've also encounted slight difficulties engaging into 2nd gear. this only happens when the engine is cold. it
doesn't quite grind or crunch when i shift but it definitely doesn't glide into place like all the other gears. you
can actually feel the gear cliking when i pull from 1st to 2nd. is this normal?
your comments appreciated and what do you reckon is the problem?

I had an 82 911SC that did that when the clutch was sticking. If the clutch is disengaging incompletely this might be the problem. But I got that after long periods of storage which you didn't have. Maybe someone else has a suggestion.
Good Luck

There was an article about "clutch" in the most recent copy of Pano that talks about that. And it sounds exactly like th symptom as it was described in there. And I believe the remedy was also described in there. Let me know if you need me to fax you a copy.

For cars that are not driven during winter months or have been stored for some time, the owner may encounter a situation where the clutch disk becomes temporarily attached to the flywheel by surface corrosion, and won't release even with the clutch pedal fully depressed. Starting the car with first gear engaged and then driving the car up an inclined roadway requiring some engine torque can usually remedy this. By depressing the clutch pedal while going up the incline under power, the extra climbing load on the disk without the clamping force of the pressure plate will normally break it loose and return the clutch to normal operation.

The time frame seems a bit strange.. I don't drive my car for up to a week and don't have any problems like that.
However, I live in California and my car is parked in an enclosed garage. I don't know how humidity in your area might change things.
