Default What The Hex

I am trying to replace the last three spark plugs on top bank - the passenger side. In order to gain an access to spark plugs I need to remove several parts.
As it is described on p-cars.com DIY article I need to remove the muffler's mounting bracket by unbolting one hex bolt. The hex tool I am using fits the hex opening of the bolt not as tight as I expected. Under the load it actually looses the grab with the bolt and strips the hex pattern of the bolt. I am afraid if I keep trying to use the same hex tool I will end up with stipped bolt. I think it would be easier to unbolt it if the hex tool would fit the bolt tighter. May be I am not using right tool? Do you what is the size of the hex tool for that bolt? Is it metric?

Make sure all the grime is cleaned out of the bolt head, and be sure to use a metric allen wrench. Those fasteners are soft and will strip easily. You can even tap on the wrench with a hammer to ensure the wrench is seated all the way.

Hope this helps!

I am not using the metric hex tool. It is probably the reason why I can't unbolt it.

You need to use the proper sized metric allen wrench to avoid stripping the head any further. Buy a set of Craftsman allen wrenches and see if that helps.

Also, as Chris mentions, make sure the wrench is set all the way into the bolt head flush and square before trying to loosen the bolt.

You will need a 6mm allen socket to remove that fastener. If you are stripping the inside with the wrong size, when you get the correct one you may want to put a little coarse valve lapping compound inside the fastener before inserting the allen socket.
