To my horror I was topping up the oil and when I cleaned the dipstick I noticed gold colored metal particles on the rag. I checked multiple times and the particles were still there (see below).
I'm going to drain the crankcase and see if it is full of metal as well
Sounds like a bearing let loose, are there any other possibilities?

Don't panic... do a search on this as it is most likely the dipstick scraping the side as you withdraw it to read it. Have seen it mentioned many times in the past.
It is scary, though, isn't it?

Thanks for the heads up.
Well, I'm leading myself to believe that explanation. I checked the crancase oil and it is clean. The dipstick does put up a fight in the last 4 inches of insertion so maybe that's it. I try adjusting it so that it doesn't have as much resistance and see what happens.

Ken:
Find someone with a real filter cutter and have them open up both oil filters for you.
Then, you can spread out the paper element and truly see what you have.

Thanks for the response, Steve. Does the story about the bronze fitting in the dipstick tube sound plausible? I straightened out the dipstick and now there is less effort required to insert the dipstick and there are fewer particles. If there were particles in the oil, would they show up on the dipstick or would the particles sink to the bottom of the oil tank?
