Question Lowjack on a Porsche???

I have been a member of Rennlist for two years....enjoy all the info and comraderie here.

Is there even a reason to consider a Lowjack on a 993 with the drive block system??? I have never seen a thread but just curious...

Comments, TIA. null

There's a LoJack on the car I just bought, although I haven't transferred the LJ registration from the former owner yet. I imagine even with the Drive Block sys the car could still be swiped, so who knows. I'm not sure if I will pony up for the LJ coverage...looking forward to any responses to your question.

It depends on where you live. In my area, there are policemen on "LoJack" duty, so the recovery rate is pretty good. However, if there aren't enough police staff, then it probaby won't matter.

The reason I posted it is that I live in Phoenix with a high rate of theft, and the close proximity to Mexico.

And while parked at the airport during a biz trip I had the center cover on my BBS wheels removed.. only one. But thieves are thieves...

Bob 993 Cab,

Insurance rates in AZ are high because stolen cars often end up in Mexico and are not recovered. (I used to live in the DC area where zillions of cars were stolen but after they ran out of gas they were recovered with moderate damage.)

I read that California has a Lojack detector at the border. As the detector beeps, the car is already in Mexico. What good is that? I doubt that Lojack coverage in AZ (new to Lojack) is much better.

Sports cars don’t seem to be high on the list for stolen cars here. Further, I think most thieves would have to tow a Porsche equipped with Drive Block to move it. That would warrant a stop at the border!

I don’t leave my 993 at the airport for fear of dings and lack of luggage space. However,
I have no fear of my 993 being stolen with Drive Block activated. Frankly, when I lived in the DC area, a flashing LED was enough to protect cars from thieves. (No BMWs in the neighborhood were stolen because a red LED flashed on the radio!) I would not pay for Lojack coverage in Arizona.

Regards,
George
In sunny Arizona

Lo Jack sounds and looks good. I can't say whether I have it or not (That defeats the purpose). This is why you never see a car with a sign "Protected by LoJack."

However, I did investigate the LoJack approach and found another device that I would consider. It is called OnGuard and is made by the folks that make OnStar for GM, ATX Technologies in Dallas, TX. You can look them up on line.

It is really space age stuff. According to On Guard, "a tracker is hiden inside your vehicle. If one of the special On Guard buttons is pressed or a theft is reported, the Tracker interprets the signals from GPS satellites and transmits this data to the On Guard Response Center using cellular technology. At the Response Center, special computers display your vehicle's location (you too if you have been car jacked) under the watchful eye of the Emergency Communications Specialists. These specialists monitor the situation, talk to you (if necessary), dispatch help or alert police and guide them to your vehicle." The device will also alarm if the battery is disconnected and/or the alarm is activated. There is an emergency Panic Button that alerts police and sends a silent call for help. Using the cellular technology, they can monitor the conversation inside the car.

You can also put an "electronic fence" around the car. The On Guard office is notified of what quadrants are acceptable for your car to be located in. If the car goes out side the boundaries, the On Guard operator calls the car with the cellular device and asks for a pass word. If the driver doesn't have it, the car is assumed to be stolen.

Once the car is located by the police, the ignition can be disabled via satellite commands, in a safe are, of course.

LoJack emits a beep...I believe that to locate a stolen car equipped with LoJack, you would have to triangulate to find the car. With On Guard, the Longitude and Latitude of the stolen car would be available as a result of the GPS.

Also with On Guard, you can call for directions, etc.,

There is another neat feature for the full on paranoic who lets some other person drive their car, a full map print out of where the car has been is available.

Cellular coverage must be available for On Guard to work...ATX Technologies, Dallas, TX

I bought my car from a BMW dealer, and since I already bought a BMW from them, they offered to give me LoJack for free. I would not have purchased it otherwise. The most direct benefit is the savings on Insurance (at least in MA), especially on such a high cost-to-insure car.
