Post Engine compartment "hood" does not stay up

When I open the engine compartment on my car, the hydraulic pistons do not keep the hood open. Is not the thing supposed to stay up without holding it??

Yes; but the shocks wear out. Replacing them is part of periodic maintenance.

The rear deck should stay open, so it's time to replace the gas filled struts.

You can either replace the shocks OR use the most common method for holding it open... a broom handle!
