A couple of weeks ago there was a topic on cold starts and the noise some of us hear before the car warms up.
Last week when I brought my car in for pre tech inspection I had my Pcar shop listen for the noise after the car sat overnight.
If my memory is incorrect, please correct me. but I belive the conclusion of that topic was, the noise is normal.
I hope I'm not stepping on any toes by posting this but the shop that services my car heard the noise and corrected it. I needed new belts.
I have started the car cold several times since the fix and she roars right up with no strange noises.
Hope this helps..

Since I had started a related thread a while back I though I'd chime in. The noise I hear on cold start-up is a ticking sound coming from the engine area which lasts only a couple of minutes and then disappears. My mechanic assured me that this was normal and many on here concurred and provided the same explanation (oil pressure needing to be built up in the hydraulic lifters).
B-Line...does that sound like what you were hearing?

exactly what I was hearing...
the explaniation from my mechanic was..
please excuse my mistakes:
belts get old and stretch out and start to stiffen and when you first turn the car over they stretch out a bit until they are at normal expansion or something like that
I don't think it's drastically impt that you change it but eventully they might fray and break anyway. So, it might be a good idea to try changing your belt's anyway.
I originally was told it was the flywheel by the guy who did the PPI.
But, before you go and change anything you might want to get some input from those on this board who are not mechanically challenged like myself.
This was just my experience and thought it might help. It worked for me in any case but I'm sure it's possible/probable that it is the hydralic lifters too.
In conclusion, I'm not saying you want to change your belts. I'm just saying I had a weird ticking noise at startup and the belt change cured it..

B-Line...thanks for sharing your experience...that's what makes this board great...the fact that we can learn from the experiences and knowledge of so many others!
I hadn't given the infamous ticking sound another thought until now
Any other thoughts out there?
