100 Cell Cat.Will it affect CA smog test?
Hi,
I have a 300 cell cat. now. Hans Lieb of RUF informed me that if I can get to a 100 cell cat, it'll really help the car's perfromance. As I have NO experience or know-how in this area, please help with these questions:
Why would a 100 cell cat. be better than a 300 cell cat, freer air-flow?
Will a 100 cell cat. cause the car to fail CA smog test, be it visual or emission levels?
Does any one know of a 100 cell cat. with CARB certification? If yes, where to get that.
Thanks.
CP

CP,
My only experience along these lines is with a "high-flow" cat I used to use on the Cobra. If the smog guy knew what he was looking for, it would have failed the visual (he couldn't see it). It passed the sniffer... barely. It finally wore itself out, and the check-engine light came on, at which time I put the stock cats back on the car. I suspect the Porsche isn't too different, except the cat is easier to see. I have also heard on this forum that race (100 cell) cats are very poor bang-for-the-buck. Not sure this was any use. Hope to see you someday soon.

Chris,
But I don't have a CEL in my RUF.
Bottom line, do you feel the Cargarphic 100 cell cat. helped your car perform better? If so, where did you get that and about how much?
Thanks.

steve warned me that on some cars it will throw the CEL and others it will not...
....It is difficult for me to honestly say if it made much difference because I got the fabspeed supercups and steve's chip all installed at the same time (before going to the track even)... all 3 made a difference of course but I can't say for sure if one thing made more difference than another...
Sound wise the 100 cell cats make a great positive improvement!
...weight wise was a nice improvement as well...

Whenever I have had a smog check they always check out the cat to see if it is there and if it is a stock cat. I do not know if they would have issue with a 100 cell cat or not, they are fairly strict here in California.

I haven't had to pass Illinios smog test yet with the supercups or 100 cell cats.. I know that I can reset the CEL and be o.k. again for about 100 or so miles so that will be my 1st plan in 2 years when I have to get re-tested...
I planned it so I passed with 100% stock before changing everything.. and have the stock exhaust and cat in the attic just-in-case

Once you reset a CEL, you'll reset the readiness codes and then fail an emissions test
on an OBDII car ('96 and later). Most states now access the readiness states via the
OBDII connector while doing an emissions test. Check out this web site (www.systemsc.com)
on the Codes page.
The days of modifying cars have basically ended and will be non-existent in five years.
Environmentalists want clean air at basically any cost and we ALL forget what this means
in the end when we vote for it and those who support it. Just ask those who own '96 and
later 993s with SAI problems when it's emission test time. It will only get more restrictive
when it comes to automotive testing in future years.

chun,
get a pair of muffler bypasses.
that alone would be an impressive change in responsiveness!
cheap and easily reversible.
I did
besides... how much power do you really need anyways

For 100 cell sports cats try this French company www.scart-exhausts.com. Their product can also be purchased via design911 who have an outlet in both the UK and the States.
