At least according to European Car Magazine that is. Check out the new June issue, on the cover and on page 88 they do a buyers guide on the 993. Yea baby!

I just read the article. I feel privileged to own 1 of 2,000 or so C4S's. However, all 993's are truly legends. The article said something derogatory towards 964's but I cant remember what it was. I've always thought that the 993 is the beauty between the ugly ducklings.

I think the word used for the 964 was ....... "forgetable"..... yea, that was it.

Not me, that was on page 88, 19 words into the article.

That comment I think it is not really fair. The 964 was/is a great car if you think about it. personally I would not mind a 964 on the stable better yet a 1994 3.6 Turbo! Now that is an incredible car! Looks, power, classic 911 style, a trully magnificent Porsche.

I also like the 964 as well. Great looks, same great motor and more affordable.

Yah the early 964's had problems, but most were corrected come the 93 and 94 years. If it were me, I wouldn't mind having a later years 964 or an early one with ALL the problems sorted out. Classic Porsche styling with many similarities to the 993. But then again I just LOVE my 993.

As Bob Dole might say, "Stop lyin' about [the 964's] record." My 89 4 was GREAT.

So to extend the political allusions: "I knew a 964. My 964 was a friend of mine...."

The 964 is a incredible car especially the Turbo, If money were available it would be my second choice to the 993 even before a 996.

Unfortunately the 964 does have a bit of a bad reputation in Europe - C4's in particular; bad oil leaks from diffs and engine etc.

This particular article says that 2,079 C4S's were sold here in the U.S.

Just saw a 996 GT3 RS up on the rack at Mind Over Motorsports in San Diego. I found it amusing to note the engine serial numer start with 964, just as our cars do.

IMHO, the best bang for the buck "starter" track car is the 964 RS America. It has already been lightened, many have sun top delete, it has nice brakes, and its coefficient of drag (CD) is better than the 993.

However I am too late for a starter car...I already have my 993 nearly where I want it. Now if I can only find some way to fund a new coil over set up, and a G50 32 transmission with LSD, now that would be Hog Heaven!!!

I had a '91 964 and it really was a great car! It was lighter than my 993 and I had the LWF and a spectacular motor - the car rocked. It was quicker (not faster) than my 993. But the big butt of the 993 won me over. I've always had a warm spot in my heart for the 964, but the 993 was really perfection.

If you think about it the internals of a 964 are very similar to a 993 and nothing like its predecessor. Also if you remember back to the late 80's the turbo supra rice rockets and turbo rx7s were eating porsches at a fraction of the cost. The 964 was the technical answer, but Porsche screwed up on the body - the body was a mild refinement from its predecessor and consumers didn't get it. As a result it was a very low volume car and a major body upgrade was in order - the 993.

Also the early 964s had problems with the cylinder heads leaking. Porsche just didn't put a gasket between them, but corrected it in '92. They also had many dual mass flywheel failures. last other learning was that the twin plug motor needed a vent kit, which was also added by '92. These weren't much different from the electrical harness issues of the original 993s. Those aside the 964 is a raw beast and once you get those issues resolved it is a great car!

As a sidenote, the 964 engine is a stronger built motor (internals). The 993 is lightened to produce more power, but IMHO longetivity and track readiness was compromised.

Cheers,
Boris

PS The 993 big butt could stand to loose a few pounds and get a LWF.
