I've seen one car with this factory option but didn't drive it.

I agree completely this shifter is way better than my old 930 but not as good as a number of other less expensive cars. I'm looking at the RS kit for the next modification (does it ever end?). I haven't driven the car, but just playing with the shifter on the showroom floor, the throw and feel of the 997S's box was VERY impressive to me.

Wow Folks,

One day out at Sacramento, and missed all the fun here. OK, some answers.

I changed transmission and clutch fluid within one month of getting the RUF here.
I have only driven Pin's 993s. both have SSK installed, thus not OEM.
My car actually has a RUF SSK. I have the shift **** lowered 1.25" to shorten the shaft length.
RUF came with LWF and racing clutch, so no before-after comaprison. I love the way it revs though.
I have driven 996tt and 993tts, and both shifted better than my RUF, but memory is somewhat vague.
My transmission is NOT OEM Porsche, but RUF installed. Would not know if there's much of a difference.

I test drove a slant nose turbo, and the shifter is like floor shifting a bus. Definitely felt funny. Would love to have a chance to drive other's P-car around here, just to feel the difference.

I am not trashing the Porsche tranny/shifter by any means. But like someone said above, Porsche, being the ultimate panache sports car, one would expect the shifting to be one of the best on the market. Your point of the engine/transmission placement is well taken. That could be the difference maker.

I want to preserve as much of the RUF components in my car as possible, so I won't look into an RS shifter.

Thanks for the education.

I test drove 997's a couple of times before putting a deposit on one. I would describe the feel as "precise", "smooth", and "effortless". It is a definite improvement over my 993's gearbox, but I do enjoy the engaging feeling of rowing the 993's gears. The 997's feel reminds me of an Infiniti and Acura I used to own...must be the gearbox's asian origin.

so assuming $$ no object for the moment (much easier for a hypothetical question online than in reality :-), what is the consensus for the absolute best SSK upgrade for the stock 993 (?).... RS? TechArt?, etc.?...

Mrsullivan,
Pardon the confusion...I have option 241 – Shorter shifting travel, factory ordered not the RS shifter, which is completely different deal.
Regards
Alex
