Post lugging the engine

I almost feel like I got some bad gas or something. Obviously, I always put Super Unleaded in, but I am getting a strange knocking and pinging sound or a lugging sound, but I was going 40 in 2nd at 3500 rpm or something and the engine is not lugging at that rpm. I coming up on my next 15k checkup. Thoughts?

If this is a new occurance, it might be the gas. Take your baby out for some exercise, ala Italian tune-up style - you might just need to clean her out

If this just started happening and happens all the time now, you might want to think about your dual distributor belt. It will cause some serious pinging like that at anywhere over light throttle. Just a thought, but if it is the case, I'd recommend against that Italian tune up as it might cause serious damage pushing on it.

It can only be "bad gas" if you had just filled it up and it started exhibiting the symptoms you described. Otherwise, you may have a bona fide problem. Try and isolate the issue:
Does it happen intermittantly? At the same RPM? On acceleration? When engine is cold only? Hot only? On a moonlit night? You get the picture....

thanks. I'll refrain from temptation to find a nice straight-away and push it to 150 mph. It's been more than one tank of gas. It only happens on acceleration in low gears, stopping and starting through town, traffic lights etc etc. I put a fresh tank of Shell 93 octane in tonight so we'll see.

93 octane!!! I wish we had that here!
My car will on occasion ping in hot weather at low RPM, I always attributed it to the 91 Octane #### that we get here in CA.

try a different brand of gas, ala Cheveron Supreme. See if that helps.

shortslr,

Lubro Moly is what Phil is referring to. Do an archive search as this has been discussed often in the past. LubroMoly makes a host of chemical additives. Ventil Sauber and Jectron is what many here, especially the Porsche-cogniscenti, recommend. I just recently switched from Chevron's "Techron" to the aforementioned products.....can't say I notice a difference, so perhaps my engine's already in good shape.

Still, if your problem suddenly developed, I'm not convinced that these products will address fully the condition you described (though they are good preventive measures for the general health of you intake tract). Since the "lugging" symptoms you describe appear only on acceleration (where there's a greater fuel demand) and not at steady cruising, perhaps the fault is as simple as replacing the fuel filter. I'd try this first as it is a cheap and relatively easy if you're a DIY-er. Also, check the obvious tune-up and ignition-related components, as well (you never mentioned how many miles you have on your car). Let us know what happens

It's a 1996 with 32,000 miles. I bought the car with 19 and had the 15k maint redone at 20, so I am going to do it again at 35k. I was a 'do it yourself' guy as a kid, now 35, with my 69 Mustang. However, I am afraid start tinkering the inside of a Porsche.

I put a fresh tank in and no problems. Now if I could only remember with gas station sold me the last tank. I had nightmares that it was fully of sea water or something.
