Unhappy Traumatizing experience - My first hood stone chip

Was doing a quick wash yesterday morning and found my first hood chip, just a little a week after owning the car. It's about 2mm x 2mm, 3" to the left of the badge.

And I was just comtemplating about getting invisi-shield!

Any tips on how to emotionally get over this one?

On a more practical side, it looks like a paint touch-up kit is in order. Was thinking of getting it from www.paintscratch.com although I've seen postings on a similar pen from www.autovisuals.com. I was leaning towards paintscratch since the basecoat/clearcoat combo solution is cheaper than autovisuals. Any comments on this?

Dont get over it emotionally...get if fixed. One rock chip is nothing, get a reputable company (call your local P dealer and ask who they use) to fix the chip or do it yourself (search the archives). Im thinking the experience has helped you make up your mind on isvisi-shield so get it done and dont worry about it.

Rezal,

I have the auto-visuals paint pen and it works very well on my Arena Red.

I suggest that you install film protection; you can DIY a invinca-shield kit or find a local installer for one of the other brands. In Phila there should be installers - in Upstate NY there wasn't. There are many post on this. Invinca-shield has a ordering website (www.invinca-shield.com). I think the kit for the C2 is #3618.

Yhe film kit will virtually eliminate you having to use the touch-up pen.

Hope this helps.

Rezal,

Do all of the above, in that order
Then resign yourself to the fact that your entire front end is a magnet for attracting road junk. now drive it and enjoy the beast!

Thanks for the tips.

I remember asking MB why the 993 wasn't a concours winner like his previous Turbo. He said that it got too stressful driving it around. I can now relate...

Placing an order of invinca-shield and touch-pen as we speak right now!

And yes, the car will still get pounded around be it a PCA rally or a DE. No trailer queen here!

Rezal -

I suggest that you get the invinca-shield WITHOUT the hood badge cutout...much cleaner IMHO. You can request to have the pieces customized for little or no charge.

Besides the standard kit (w/o the badge cutout), any other optional items that I should get?

I was thinking of the mirror, rear fender and rocker panel. I remember reading that someone had also requested that the bumper piece be sent as a 1-piece instead of the 2-piece that's shown (although installing the 1-piece is supposedly a PITA).

Take up heavy drinking. It's gonna keep happening so resign yourself to it. Get the invisi-whaever by all means. You'll still get chips, but you'll feel better.

The bumper piece is the most difficult to install as it requires more skill in placement and some stretching/manipulation...a challenge with 2 pieces and if you can do a one piece then you could moonlight as an installer

I got the hood piece that goes further up the hood instead of the one that ends slightly above the hoodcrest - more protection and less noticeable as down low on the hood is a "busy area". This is a modification of the basic kit that they had done for someone else and is listed on the website under a different kit number. It is slightly less easy to install as the hood does have some curvature but it is not difficult.

The mirror is an unusual piece and it looks a bit more difficult to install as the mirror is more 3 dimensional. I got this anyways as the small pieces are cheap but I'm not sure if I will install it. Get the rear fender if yours needs replacement or as a spare as the shipping charges are not cheap. Other pieces I got are the ones for under the door handle but I have not yet installed it. I have a TT bumper so I got all the small lower pieces for the spoiler as well.

Lastly, opt for the deluxe squeegee that has the rubber edge, or you can buy one from Pep Boys. The standard squeegee is plastic and if you press hard will scratch the coating on the film...scratches can be polished out but is a PITA.

Get the pieces that go on the rear edges of the wheel arches behind each wheel -- the tires throw stones at these areas.
