Cool photos, Chris.

Why is the underside painted dayglo orange? Is this some sort of road marker to indicate where the car bottoms out on the track?

Mark, yes. The skid on our car is a spec. stainless version. It gets painted before every session on track to tell the race engineer where (and how hard) the car is bottoming. Because, one can never believe the driver

Thanks, Chris. Looks like you guys should have painted the nose cone, too.

That appears to be at Cleveland, I think Toyota used in-car video of that event in one of their Toyota Atlantic TV ads.

Here's a sentimental favorite for me. My old '97 cup car @ Hockenheim in it's heyday:

DJ: landings every time, never scraped...

mmmm. That explains why the right under side is hum reshaped. Anything else I should know?

By the way the car has now a few new dings on the passenger side. Something related to spinning at turn 8 at TH at around 100mph... Ouch

Thanks Chris

Ever once in a while I need to be reminded of why I gave up formula cars

Yep, Cleveland '02 during the race. Driver was Alex Figge going over. There is a Toyota Atlantic commercial with in-car footage of Roger Yasakawa as Alex drove over the top. Pretty scary really. I saw it happen as I just happen to look down towards turn one and saw a car go airborn. Thought to myself, hhmmmm, thats not good..

Later that year, we had another scary moment as one car launched over the top of his team mate at Toronto. Straight over the rear wing when the tires touched, it launched the top car like from a crossbow.. Luckily only car damage, oh and a few egos as well..

blu

thanks for the link to the flying GT-1. As I recall, the problem was he was following closely and lost downforce on the nose in the dirty air, just as he crests the rise.

Somewhere in the basement I have the Mercedes full gainer too.

Mike:
No problem, I always get a kick out of watching that crash in addition to the Mcqueen crash into the rail in Le Mans. Two of the best Porsche crashes that I know of. Unless... anyone else knows of one they would like to share with us, hint, hint. I guess it's back to tomfoolery.

And Chris, great pics, thanks.

I would also like to say that Chris is the perfect Rennlister. He is incredibly knowledgable about Porsches and racing from a technical standpoint but also likes to have fun and share in some of the more non technical, lighter moments and discussions. I always look forward to reading your posts and hearing what you have to say.

This one's just nasty - two for the price of one. Ouch...
