Post The car floats

At high speed turns both the front and the back seems to float. The back gets unsettled. Guess I need to look at replacing the shocks and springs. I can't have the car any lower than is at present. I have enough road rash reasons not to want it any lower.

Most aftermarked solutions seems to lower the car about 2,5 cm (1 inch). Don't want to sacrifice comfort either as the roads where I live are not very good.

The car is a German spec 96 C4S with stock suspension. Any suggestions as to what would work without lowering the car - only has 9,5 cm (less than 4 inches) ground clearance at the moment - according to the manual that is.

Try the search feature top right of the page, search on suspension, bilstein, shocks etc and you will find a pile of info. Also visit the FAQ at the top of the forum home page.

Somehow I think you may end up speaking to a great guy by the name of Gert.

All the best.

Thanx!

Had a look at the fender to ground clearance, barely 25 inches on the left side and about 25,5 inches on the right side.

Lowering a car is no alternative to stiffening it, and you can't increase your spring rates unless you have sufficient dampening force.

Just replacing the shocks can make a world of difference, depending on their condition/miles on your car.

Took the car out for some testing earlier today. Due to the fact that roads in Norway are generally in a poor state of repair and grooved from the use of spiked winter tires the car tram lines quite a bit.

The main problem is not the tram lining, but the floating sensation and the unsettled back end. The Porsche should be able to corner faster than normal family saloon cars (it does, but....). The car has a bit more than 60K miles and I'm pretty sure the dampers are due for a change.

The car sits about 1/2 inch lower on the left side (something is not right?). Its quite low as is, and I don't want it any lower. Probably need to go abroad to get new dampers at a reasonable price. Any advice on a solution that works and does not lower the car would thus be much appreciated.

Or, when did you have your alignment done last time?

Many other used 993 new owners have reported exactly the same problem. This matter has been extensively discussed here, I can tell you from personal experience that when you change your suspension this will all go away.
I upgraded to H&R coilover suspension and it transformed the car to what it should have been all along.
In your case you should contact Gert at www.carnewal.com and check out the Bilstein HD with H&R springs combination. It is not a track suspension nor very harsh and will cure all the unsettled feelings the car gives you right now. You can also change to the M030 factory suspension but the problem is that much like the ones you have they will not last very long.

Good luck.
