Default CD Changer for alpine

If anyone has the alpine and needs a changer, I have one with bracket and carpaet covering. I bought it when the seller told me it was correct for my car but it was not (I had a becker). If you want it then drop me a line.

i dont mean to sound like a jerk.. but i think it is a waste of time to be comparing the 'stock' alpine and the stock becker unit. Both are crap and represent 9 year old audio technology (at least the becker looks a little more "OEM" than the oem alpine), but ill leave that for the concours people..

If you go thru the effort of removing your stock head unit, please, please find/steal/borrow, the $400-500 to get a new alpine. My old C2 had the becker unit and i replaced it with a new alpine #7996 (?) and it sounded much, much better and did not look like a videogame - plus im not an audiophile, but it was obvious. My 96 (95?) TT has the stock alpine and despite the hifi option in the TT is really is crap and not as good as a current alpine. Im certain you can get a significant stereo improvement for under 800 with a new head unit and better speakers. IMHO.

Truth be told, it's the hi-fi option amp and speakers that are crap ... if you're using a new power amp and putting in new speakers, you're just going to use the pre-amp outputs on the old head unit. I have a new Alpine head unit, because I wanted to be able to play MP3 files, but I'm not convinced the sound is a huge upgrade over the original Alpine that was in the car. You have some more advanced tone options, EQ shaping, and so forth ... but I don't believe the new Alpines have that much of a better D/A converter in them. They're not advertising them as 8-bit or higher, at any rate, like some other companies do. My CDs sound really good at home through my old Sony CD player, which is circa 1986, but that's because I have great speakers, a great receiver, etc. (Yes, if you spend $1k on a home CD player, you'll hear a difference.)

I spent $800 on my C4's audio system ... I put in $200 Focal Polyglass separates up front, a good $150 MTX 2-channel amp in the trunk, a $200 Infinity Basslink sub in a rear seat and a $250 Alpine head unit in, and it rocks.

Vic is correct that the stock speakers and amp are really bad. My old C2 had he new alpine which was 60x4 and didnt have an external amp - it sounded much better, so i believe the newer head units have more power if you dont want to have an external amp. Otherwise, Vic is probably right, that the sound isnt that much worse.
That said, if you are going thru the trouble of removing the stock head unit, you might as well put in a more current one and be able to play mp3 files and get more power.
Call Rod at caraudioinnovations, he is very helpful and has done lots of 911 stereo improvements.

Thanks for the reply guys.

I'm really not too concerned with the sound as I think they are adequate. Could be better for sure, but 1/2 the time i'm probably listening to the sweet Flat-6 behind me.

I really want to stay with the stock look and have the ability to change cd's on the go w/o stopping and opening the trunk for the changer everytime. I'll probably keep my eyes out on a CDR-220.

Thanks again everyone.

For what it's worth, I was just flipping through an old brochure of the 993 from 1995 and sure enough, there's a picture of the Alpine CD player installed in the dash of the car. So, perhaps it's more "stock" than I recalled.

Thanks,
Peter

Good info here. I have the Alpine 7807 installed in my car and was hoping to add some kind of direct ipod input. Do any of you know if it has RCA inputs ? Also, if anyone has a manual floating around I'd love to have a look at it.

Thanks!

If the Alpine 7807 has an Ai-Net plug you can get a Ai-Net to RCA connector and RCA to iPod connector and you're set. That's how I've set it up in my car. I tested it once and it worked. Haven't bothered to turn it on since. Prefer the song of the 3.6 flat six and RSRs.

EDIT: I don't think the 7807 has Ai-Net, it's a pretty old unit. You're better off switching to a CDR-210 or even a CR-210 (both factory radios) and getting the RCA hook up from Becker Autosound.

Yes they are, but they don't have the AUX option.

I'm not familiar with the AUX option. Does that enable the head unit to control the ipod?

Incorrect ... the Alpine unit was the stock unit for Porsche in 1995 when ordered with the Hi-Fi option

No, it enables the head unit to receive auxiliary audio signal. You will have to control the iPod.

Have a '95 with the HiFi option. I bought an Alpine CDA-9887 head unit, worked the wiring harness from that into the existing connections. Have not replaced the original amplifier or speakers (on the project list). Pulled the CD changer and old head unit. They can be swapped back or handed off to the next owner.

Default Photos Alpine 7807 and new Alpine 172 Blue Tooth

Factory charged $ 299 for head unit OEM Alpine and $ 930 for the Nokia Amp HIFI Option......costly in those days....
