Also noticed that the 'check engine' light does not light with the key at position 2 before you start the engine. And the drivers manual states that the 'check engine' light is only relevant for a Turbo. You would think that it would at least come on so as to test the bulb. Perhaps they disabled this feature in the UK ?

Back from the very helpful 964 board, where they pointed me to this link in the 964 FAQs:

http://members.rennlist.com/jfk964/bw_faultcodes.htm

This will answer all your questions about codes! It turns out that the code I was getting was the "no codes generated" or all clear code. I'm just glad I didn't just tear into my injectors..!

"I gave this a go tonight, but no joy - does that mean that I actually have OBD II on my 1995 UK spec 993 cab ? Did the UK go OBD II earlier than the US ? How can I tell for sure what I have - couldn't find a label under the hood, and the cover just has 'OBD' on it ?"

The real "acid test" is to try and connect to the DME using an OBDII scanner. Even with
some 993s which were ODBII certified, I've had problems interfacing with as have
some of the emissions test stations here in So. California. It appears that some
early 993 DME's OBDII firmware wasn't fully OBDII compliant which requires a waiver
from referee station, since an OBDII access is required for an emissions test.

Thanks, TomF! Very helpful--I was also getting code 15, no faults stored.
