But how many of us are going to be strapping into six point harnesses with a helmet and HANS device on while we go for a fall drive?

Airbags are an interesting - but off topic - subject. Sorry for the hijack! ( I like the three spoke 996 wheel, but without the carbon fiber.) The original premise behind the US Spec airbags was an unbelted average male. This was a major cause of injury to women and children. After a few years of carnage, the spec for restraint was changed to make the airbags less lethal. In Europe, they used a lower power bag from the get-go. This brings us back to the steering wheel choice. If you were in a five point harness, belted to a racing seat in a cage equipped car, I'd say the non-airbag wheel (#3 is the one I like) would be entirely appropriate. However, if that is not the case, I'd say go for the airbag wheel. Besides, it would look more integrated with the rest of the car. As others on the board point out, saftey comes from a well integrated system of protective devices.

Not only because it looks cool, it's also lighter...

I have Porsche Motorsport.

Have you looked at the Momo Prototipo? For some reason I find it beautiful and about to buy it. I am just looking for an alcantara one. Classic, reminds me of the old Alfa Romeos and RSR obviously.

Jean,

You can get Porsche Motorsport version at least from Gert, or you can get "aftermarket" version from aftermarket places (don't remember now which one of them sells but probably few of them).

Aftermarket will be at least half the price, I believe it's a same wheel (made by Momo) but doesn't have those magical 7 engraved letters...

I wen't with the original since it's from Porsche motorsport and that, of course, is more cool...

FWIW, the one at the top is the Porsche/Momo unit in the 993 RS... at
least those without airbags.

Mine has no bags and this unit is the one fitted.

DJF1,

That's the steering wheel I would like to have, you have the price of it without the carbon?

TIA

I think the techart wheels are made by Raid, who also supply aston, konigseeg etc with these wheels. Also popular with miata drivers. More designs and maybe chaper direct:
