In town our basket handle is easily visible in the rear view and reminds us that our third brake light has not been stolen! Teenaged girls swoon at the sensuous curves and the Mies-esque arch which muscularly stretches from one side of the decklid to the other.
When we see each other on the road, we make the secret sign, the sign of the Basket Handle.
We scorn you unlucky souls whose brake light pines for release within the glass prison of the backlight.
And best of all, secret spy shots of the 997 TRIPLE TURBO have a funny piece of "camoflauge" above the decklid....

I don't think of Mies as doing many arches, in furniture or in architecture. The Barcelona chair has some curves to it, but the net impression is those big rectangular cushions.

In years to come the basket handle will be seen as the "split window" of 993s, denoting the very first and purest cars to come to our shores. Concours competitors will furtively drill holes in their decklids by moonlight to surreptitiously "basket mod" their cars in the hopes of securing that last important point. Imitation basket handles will flood the market. Middle-aged men who post on dating message boards such as Match.com will lie about having the famous "Basket 911". The 998, when it arrives, will have a stressed carbon-fiver basket handle baked into the monocoque of the car.
I offer you the basket hand of friendship one last time. Join us or die. It's easy to join the club. Just order three simple Porsche part numbers, a little paint, and a weekend of a good body shop's time. Basket handle widebodies... the time is now.
