Call me the flip-flop king of the Porsche world...

I hear ya, Bill. Buying a higher mile, low cost car is certainly the economical way to go! You won't lose much of your dime if you have to dump it down the road. Mid to high thirties is the way to go, if you can find a nice one in that range. I'd LOVE to have a Targa, but would be afraid of that roof. Leaking, flexing, is not my idea of fun. Maybe most of them don't do this, but some do.
What about color? What is your dream color for this next car? Uh, speed yellow would look nice. After owning your ole blue bombshell, it's all downhill from there That was a real standout.

couple of things for you to consider
#1 you sold at the low point of the market if you sold this time last year. The economy was pretty shaky and no one was buying high end cars.
#2 the 993 market is up a bit from last year.
#3 sounds like you have already nixed the idea of a 996. Good decision as they are still depreciating rapidly. They are nice cars though, for waterpumpers
#4 find a Porsche Certified 993 and get a warranty, that way you get the classic, reliable 993, with a factory warranty. Check porsche.com there may be some 98's still there, but the prgram only allows for 7 year and newer cars so very shortly the 98's won't qualify.
I am about to list my 1997 993 C2. Arena Red/Cashmere. Motorsound, Driver Comfort seat w/lumbar, HiFi, Litronics. Porsche Certified Warranty through 100k or 12-18-05. Car has 61K miles and is in great shape. Few rock chips but 8.5/10 paint and 9/10 interior. Just got new clutch, flywheel, battery and has had 60k Dealer service. Listing it for 41k. PM me if interested.

Jon,
Thanks for the offer but I'll probably stick with an "S" model or a targa. I've always had an affinity for "oddball" or "different" cars having owned over the years:
TVR 280i
TR8
AH3000 MkI, MkII, and MkIII
Fiat X1/9
Spitfire 1500
TR4A
VW Superbeetle "Sunbug"
etc....

The Speed Yellow cars are awesome, but they are asking stupid money for them. I found one, a 98 C2S, Areo Kit, 14k on the clock, $69,900. Would not budge on price. I don't think so. Happy hunting. I have a loooooong list on websites if you want it.

I went from a 993 to a 996 and am now back in a 993. The 996 was a great cruiser but it felt numb. However, the 02 996's are pretty quick. That said, I will keep my 993. The C2S is my favorite.
