I'm using Castrol RS 10W 60. There are some Porsche teams that are using this oil in their race cars.

Well, if I'm going to be on the ignore list, it might as well be for something interesting: Is the poll arithmetic done on an original Pentium (tm) I processor? Looks like it has problems with division! An even 100 votes have been cast, and entries with 1 vote show as 0.96% of the total, not 1/100=1%.

It's a SCANDAL! Corruption in the highest places!!!

...... i don't have any of the documentation, but i read somewhere that a number of years ago BMW used Mobil 1 to run a labtest on one of its engines......after the equivalent of 1,000,000 (one million) miles, with the oil being changed at recommended intervals, the engine was torn down.......there was nothing out of factory spec........results like that are hard to ignore.......been using it in every car i've owned since 1985...........have a 94 chevy pickup with 250,000 mi on it, no oil consumption to speak of and compression is within 2 points across all 8.........0-40 in the 993 year round

My Dad worked for Mobil Oil, Petrochemicals division in the 70s and early 80s. He told me a friend of his worked on Mobil1 in those early days, and they ran a motor 100,000 miles in the lab & tore it down, didn't see any wear.

Who am I to argue with what Porsche recommends. Mobil 1 only. And... I like what I just read from Robert above, very convinced now.
Oh, and John D. sent you a PM did you receive it? Would love to buy a couple more of those small blue stickers like the one you sent me. How?

Going into the final lap Mobil 1 has a slight lead over Castrol Syntec and Other. Have yet to hear from John D. This could tip the scale folks or revive the thread, if as he says "About what I use??? ARE YOU KIDDING???? I'm not opening myself up for being Flamed!! (I probably will after the poll gets a few more votes, tho' )". Anyone say Flame War? Naaww. Not gonna happen.

I had a choice between these:

mobil 1 5w30
mobil 1 15w50
Castrol Syntec 5w50

I chose the castrol.

Being a fan of Mobil 1, I started using Castrol RS 10/60. This after I switched my stage 3 Harley Dynaglide after the Mobil 1 seemed to make the tappets tick at high temp. I thought the Mobil 1 seemed a bit too thin (granted it was the 5/40 weight) Rather than move to Mobil 1 20/50, I tried Castrol RS. No ticking.
So I used it in my first oil change in my recently acquired 993.

Well - actually, I've been at a DE for the last couple of days... Understand - ONLY to research this thread, of course I had to do it -= just to be sure that my opinion was "sound"

OK - first - let me state - I DO USE MOBIL 1 IN JEN'S 964 C4... How's that?? So - save the Flames as you continue to read......

In my 993 C4 - I'm running Castrol Syntec (a gasp arises from the reader! ) Why? Well, remember I replaced my lifters at about 120K miles, and tore the engine pretty well down. It was running Mobil 1 and had been since day "1", and the sludge that had built up around the valve covers, in the covers, around the seals of the oil return tubes, etc. was "amazing". Having rebuilt my previous '87 which ran Castrol (GTX/Syntec) for 100K miles - I never experienced those issues on the rebuild at 125K miles, and internal parts wear was almost non-existant.

Second, when using Mobil 1 (remember I didn't change until after I dropped the engine), at the track, I had oil pressure that seemed lower then it should, using 20/50, the pressure would seem to fall off at higher temps.. So again, my decision to fill with Castrol Syntec and see if there was a difference.....

Now - given equal product availability - I probably would have chosen Amsoil Racing instead of Castrol, as that's what I ran in my previous track cars - and Castrol Syntec is NOT a full "synthetic", as many realize. But - I have to be honest - getting and having a supply of Amsoil has been "difficult" at best, especially when you need a quart at the track (HOWEVER - I found a distributor, who is a Rennlist Lifer - and if it works out - which it should, I'll go back to Amsoil Racing, and if I can get it at a good price, would be pleased to post it up. Stay tuned on that....).

I will also note, that since using the Syntec, oil pressures were fine this week, with the car running back-to-back sessions throughout the two days. And - it burned less then 1qt of oil... Hmmm......???

As another datapoint - I'm running Castrol GTX in the '68 911L, and it seems to like that a lot... In that case, I see no reason to change that to Mobil 1 or Syntec in the future...

Anyway - just what I "see" in my Porsches' - and what works for me.. But - I certainly appear to be in the minority on this one!!!

Best to you!

John D.

I've used Royal Purple Synthetic in the S1. The oil temperature gets very high (~250F) and I run for up to an hour at a time. No loss in pressure, no obvious breakdown.

For the 993 and the Neon (which boosts at nearly 1.5bar with 100 octane gas and thus generates a little heat) I use the 15-50 Mobil 1.

Default m1/castrol

Just added 5-50 Syntec....valve noise is much lower .......just a thought....

Temp is lower too...about 4mm on the gauge with same drive more or less and ambient more or less (had marked it with tape to be sure).

For synthetics, I've always been a fan of Mobil 1. For non-synthetics I like both Quaker State & Pennzoil.
