I love my track appliances. But I'm willing to risk that they may end up in a wall or upside down.
OG. Here is a cheap suggestion. Next DE, rent a spec miata. That will cost you $400 everything included. I think you'll see what I mean after driving that thing 10/10 and some

Much easier to fit into than a Caterham, similar performance (1,430 lbs and 140 rwhp) eight dealers in the US, not a kit car.
If you buy it then I can afford to go racing in Spec 944 or Spec Miata!

I kind of went to the track car way by necessity. I started with my cabrio and then as I was getting more serious it was obvious that tracking the cabrio was not a great idea.
I ended up keeping both and although I'm the extreme case here where because of my work I do not get to drive my cars as much as I really want to, the value of just a ride on the cabrio at dusk on a perfect day, or a lap at speed on a track makes the ownership totally worth it.
Like Porsche says really there is no substitute...
If you give up your TT at a certain point where all the exitment of the new car is down, you will want to ride your TT on a set of twistes for fun. A track appliance is for the track. On my last vacation the first thing I wanted to do is to start and drive my cabrio ... then it was the track car
Yes I do miss my cars VERY VERY much

As someone who just had a very expensive lesson in tracking my 993, I say get a dedicated track car. I think my 993 will be totalled out. Now I'm in the boat of deciding whether I want to tie up so much money in one car again, which I want to modify and track occasionally, or buy a nice, clean 3.2 Carrera for the weekends and a beater early car for the track. My track insurance will surely drop me, since I wrecked less than one full day into my policy. So I think an early 911 that I can afford to walk away from would be best. I've seen plenty of TT's at the track and they sure look like fun. But once you start, you cannot stop and the slippery slope gets expensive.

OG. I guy here in Atl. has a 928 for sell. It's set up for track. Roll cage, seats, harness, ect. Asking 10 or 12k. If you blow an engine on a 924 a new one is only about 4k. Not too expensive to work on either. Just a budget minded thought.

i agree, not about early 911, but about being able to walk away form it if sh*t happened.

For those of you who haven't heard of David Empringham, he was a FANTASTIC open wheel driver from Canada. He cleaned up in Atlantics and was successful, IIRC, in Indy Lights (not sure of their new name at the time). I was really surprised to see that he could not advance his career in CART. At minimum, he should at least be driving professional Sports Cars.
Chris Walrod - can you elaborate more on David's career?
