Post Sources for bumper covers

Question: I'm changing 95 993 C2 bumper cover to the turbo/C4S Euro version. My body shop says Whitman's in South San Francisco carries them (as does Gert's obviously). The shop says that they are from the same manufacturer Porsche uses. In other words, they say Porsche outsources the nose piece, and this is the same supplier as Porsche, so this is "factory".

Seems like a reasonable story, and A) I save on time from Gerts and B) body shop gets their discount and gets to make a few bucks (want them to make their money and do a good job).

Question: Does this seem legit?
Thx

I am not sure if that is true. If Porsche outsources these items, which they do, it should be a Porsche item with a Porsche part number. There are companies who copy the body parts and are considered aftermarket suppliers. Some do a great job but for a part like that, I would go with factory.

can someone tell me if a rear bumper cover for 95-98's are the same part for cabriolet's (narrow body of course). Is it a direct replacement? Thx Joe B.

JS: When I ordered from Gert it took only 2-3 days to get the front and rear covers delivered to my home. I did have some difficulty locating a quality shop that would paint and install a part I supplied. They all wanted to only install what they ordered (and of course they could not get the Euro cover or wanted to charge much, much more).

C4-toy: I don't understand your question. A cabriolet (narrow body) had a different rear cover than a wide body (but fronts are the interchangeable). The narrow body Euro version rear bumper cover is a direct replacement for a US narrrow body (it just lacks the bumperettes).

Tom,
You are correct...the shop wants to make their buck, and I don't really want to de-motivate them by nickel or diming them on the bumper, but I do want to make sure it is factory.

Viken, if they have a Porsche part number, it should be ok???

You should be able to tell if it's original or not. The part number should be stamped inside the bumper, thus you would need to verify the parts before they work on it. The original is made of plastic and not fiberglass. Also, I believe it comes in a clear plastic and there's a sticker of the part number on the plastic as well.

At least that's how mine came in.

Mine were certainly not clear. I thought it was fiberglass (some ugly yellowish material).

Tom, I think R7 meant that the bumper came in a clear wrapper with a part number on it...not that the bumper was clear??

Any sure fire way to ensure the parts are factory?

Correct. The bumper itself is white.

In addition to the bumper, you will need a left and right rubber seal and you can re-use the middle, left, and right brackets. You can use the existing rubber seal but I wouldn't. The factory uses staples to clamp the seal to the bumper, thus you will have bunch of holes on the seal if you remove them from the original bumper. I'd just get a new set, which will cost you around $60 from the dealer.

Duhhh. Don't I feel silly.

Yes, I think mine came wrapped in clear plastic too. Gert included all the seals with the order (and I also got the clear Euro turn signals).

JS: I knew the body shops wanted to make their money on the deal, I just didn't find one that could/would get the Euro cover and the difference in price was a lot more than I wanted to pay. I got two quotes from shops that would supply a US cover. The final using the Euro covers from Gert and having a different shop paint and install them was $1000 cheaper.

Tom, my question was a general one. Will the stock rear bumper cover on a narrow body coupe fit a narrow body cabriolet. Reason i am asking is that i can pick up cheap used one from a coupe to replace my cracked one on my 96 cab. Thx

Toy: My understanding is that narrow body = narrow body, coupe or cab, but ask a dealer.

Tom: I'm confused...where did the $1000 cheaper part come in...$1000 cheaper of what option vs. what option? Sorry if I'm being dense.. <img src="graemlins/c.gif" border="0" alt="[ouch]" />

Tom - can you give a ballpark # as to what the whole project cost you? I am also thinking of putting a euro TT bumper on my cab.

It cost about $3300 to replace both bumper covers. The two covers and the clear lights were from Gert (about $1900) and then about $1400 for the painting and install. Oh, and about $7 for the amber bulbs

The quotes I got from body shops to supply US covers and paint were about $4300. (Hence the $1000 less to order from Gert and find a shop to paint and install). The body shop at Rector swore the turbo bumper cover would not fit and they could not install it. This was yet another instance where info from Rennlist, provided by people who had made the modification, convinced me that the dealer didn't know what they were talking about .
