Dan,
I was also considering doing the same project (putting the V1 remote display inside the tach) Since I had plenty of opportunity to screw around with the alu gauge faces recently, that I noticed there are plenty of room in there for the V1 remote display.
My only concern right now is how to mount it and how to cut the gauge face plate so that the display look professionally done.

This is exactly what Im in the process of doing. The Tach has plenty of room and is fairly easy to cut. There is a large round plastic piece that the face of the tach is connected to. The way I did this was to cut a template then go ahead and cut the face. Once the face is cut you will know exactly where to cut on the plastic. The plastic is quite brittle and will break rather easily. The best way to cut that I have found was to drill holes in it and the connect them with a saw blade. I am guessing a hot blade would work to. Once this is done you will need to cut out some of the guts to make the phone jack fit. It really is pretty easy just time consming and a little nerve racking. The one thing to look at when you are making the template is the display and the electronics are two different sizes, this needs to be taken into account when cutting. The display has a slight bend to it, once installed into the tach and put back in it is not noticealbe. That is as far as I have gotten..I will post pics of both the display and the actual radar location when done...

Great DIY by the way. <img border="0" alt="[cheers]" title="" src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" />
