Default 993 Carrera S Suspension

After my track day at Grattan my front right strut is leaking oil. Figures as the struts are from the factory some 60K miles ago. Any suggestions for a mix of city driving and track use? Does this car have adjustable springs, and if not it already stiffer and a little lower than regular Carrera. Does Bilstein or Koni sell a good set of adjustable struts and shocks without changing the springs, what do they cost and where can get them. I like the PSS9 system but it is a little expensive, does the PSS9 lower the car and by how much? Is PSS9 soft enough for the street?

AG-
Were you there this weekend? We must have met, right?

Gosh, you have asked a bunch of BIG questions. I'd recommend starting with searches for PSS9, Koni, H&R, and Eibach. You'll find TONS of info here. I went with PSS9, which is (I think) just barely soft enough for streets like here in Chicago. M030 springs with Bilstein HD shocks may be a good solution for you.

Last night I took the track rims and tires off and looked at my wounded strut. Upon further review the front springs are clearly adjustable. There is threading at the bottom of the spring and their is about 1/2 to 5/8 of an inch of lowering room. The rear springs did not have this, that was visable, it could be hidden on the top. Is this stock or has it been changed at some point. I may try lowering the existing springs and put the Bilstein HD's. Anyone come accross this before?

Sounds exactly like stock. That is how mine were before they were replaced! Threads on the fronts and none on the rears.

Randy,

Is this the M030 package? Does lowering the front keep it even without any lowering in the back? What did you replace them with?

It was the standard, but AFAIK the shocks / struts were similar. I was told that the threads on the front were only used for minor adjustments and not for lowering purposes. I replaced with PSS-9s and they are wonderful!

Good luck with whatever you choose.

AG Damis,

There are tons of opinions in the archives on a variety of suspensions. Take a look and you'll find that the "usual suspects" keep coming up:

- PSS9
- Bilstein HDs with either H&R or RoW M030 springs
- H&R system

Everyone has slightly different needs and priorities so read and weigh those opinions along side with your own concerns. Once you narrow it down, I'd recommend you get a ride in someone's car that is outfitted with such a suspension to see if it is then to your liking (lots of generous R-listers out there willing to offer you a ride). After all, only you know what you're willing to live with on the road. And as for cost differences, whichever system you choose will incur the same installation/alignment costs (not cheap), and you don't want to do that twice. Choose well.

On my '95 PSS9 lowers car to where top of tires is about even with top of fender cutout (note - height is adjustable on them). I find the PSS9 to be a little bit to the point of being too stiff for the street; getting some good "clunks" from the back below about 50 MPH on average condition Western PA roads. Might be OK on La-La Land glass-smooth roads but not along the rust belt where "pothole" is a common noun.

The M030 setup with Euro M030 springs were on the car for prob. 6 years; found them to be great.
