Question Leland West Insurance...any experiences?

I did a search and the latest replies were over 6 months old, so I wanted to check with everyone. I understand their restrictions and have no problems with them, but if I need to file a claim, I don't want to get screwed
For my '97 993, 5000mi/year max, garaged/pleasure car, agreed $45K value, 1000/1000 ded., 300K liab., I can get insured for $516/year. Anybody have experinece with them, good or bad?

I've be with them since they started..
I've insured my Porsches (and others).
I've been lucky...the only claims I've had have been towing expense and they were quick to send a check. So for, so good!

I've never filed a claim in 12 or 13 years with them, so I can't answer from that perspective. But I know I've saved a lot of money.

There is a fair amount of documentation required, and some restrictions on usage, but the restrictions meshed with my usage.

they specifically do not insure Driver Ed events according to their web site and they insinuate that other policies that say they do really will not.

Many past threads on this topic re De events and insurability. My State Farm Rep says they are covered in that they are not a race nor a timed event. Never had to make a claim and suspect that the first one will probably be the last one with State Farm. My annual State Farm cost in Cincinnati was a little higher than the Leland price quote available off of the web site. i use a $ 1,000 deductible on collision and $ 500 on Comprehensive with a 100,000/300,000 liability limit

Guess if you do not do driversed events you may be okay. thery also stress that driving to or from work is not covered and you must have another car assigned as your daily driver

good luck

Just as an FYI...Leland West has been and is this month's sponsor on the main 911 email list.

They have been a great bunch to work with so if you have any problems please let me know and keep us posted on your experience with them. Currently, I'm planning on changing over the insurance on my 1968 911 to them as I don't drive it that much and it will save me money.

I asked my agent if they cover DE events. She said NO. I asked her to direct me to the section in my policy where it excludes such and event because it is NOT racing or timed events. She she could not find the section and that I should send her some information on exactly what DE events are and she would submit the information to the Underwriter's for a decision. I pointed her to the PCA website section on DEs. She called the next day to inform me that they would NOT cover DE events. Therefore, I am dropping State Farm for a company that specializes in "weekend" type driving cars (that's what I do in my car)...possibly Leland West. FYI, all other companies I've looked at also don't cover DE events.

I readt that Leland requires a car to be garaged so that others have no acces to it.

My car sits in my condo's garage, garage is locked etc. but obviously, other people living there have acces in the garage. My car is also covered when it's there.

Does anyone have info if they'll make an exeption like this?

If you want something binding, you need something in writing from an underwriter.

Today I was actually going to switch from 25 years of Geico to State Farm because, through Rennlist, I had heard that State Farm DOES cover DE's. My new potential SF agent verified this with me but I don't actually have it documented by underwriting. Thanks for the heads up, Bill.

Allen, Leland West is not an avenue since they don't cover DE's. Try American Collectors Insurance. They sell track insurance for 1.5% of the value of the car with a $500 deductible, offer no liability, and require four or more track events in the past three years before they will insure you.

I'm calling the SF agent this morning to get my coverage in writing.

Bill,
It IS the Underwriter's that made the decision not to cover the DE events...so your understanding is probably correct.

Mark,
I really don't do many DE events, so I'm not really looking for someone who covers them. My main reason for looking into Leland West was because of the cost savings...$516/year vs $864/year. There are restrictions associated with those savings, but I am good with those restrictions.

If anyone gets documentation that State Farm DOES cover DE events, please let me know. Even though I don't do many, I would keep them if they would cover it...for the extra ~$350/year.

Remember:

Your policy doesn't offer coverage based on what the agent says.

Your policy doesn't offer coverage based on what the underwriter says.

Your policy doesn't offer coverage based on what the claims rep says.

The policy offers coverage based on what the policy says. As much as the insurance companies would like you to believe that they get to decide what's covered, the truth is that a judge gets to decide based exclusively on the contract. Any vagueness in the policy is settled against the favor of the party who wrote the contract. (That is, vagueness is settled in your favor.)

C4S4ME, you're right. The agent I'm dealing with says the policy IS the contract, but he's going to check with underwriting anyway to ensure that there are no endorsments that can change the language of the policy.

I'm still asking for something in writing.

Allen,

I forgot to mention that the SF agent said the policies vary from state to state. Even though it appears that the State Farm policy for Maryland covers DE's because it does not specifically limit them, your state may have different coverage.

I found LW to have too many restrictions that my current carried (Progressive)does not have. Not that this is a Progressive endorsement.

One other item that was important to me was the ability to get an additional insurance rider with LW that they could not provide. My suggestion, which you may already have done, is not only compare prices, but compare the total package of insurance you require.
