Wink Airbox Modification Pics

Hi Everyone,

I know I'm opening the door on getting slammed here, but I'd like to get some peer opinion.

I recently purchased the Fabspeed air-intake cover that removes the airflow restriction. I loved the way my car sounded, but I didn't much care for it's appearance or the way it let water into the filter while getting the car washed or if I got caught in rain.

I don't know if getting water into the filter really harmed anything, but I went ahead and modified the fabspeed cover to the bellow. What do you guys think? Is anybody else intrested in a similar conversion?

BTW, the mesh is removable. It is held in place by an aluminium strip inside the cover. I'm already thinking about changing it to aluminium honeycomb mesh (slightly stronger).

PS: I also fashioned an aluminum filter for the blower box intake on the left side on the engine bay.

Wouldn't it restrict the air flow and made it worst than the original purpose? You might as well put on the original cover back and cut out a big chunk on the side to allow more air flow.

I also have the Fabspeed air box and since I don't take my car to the car wash and we don't get enough rain in Southern Cal, I don't have to worry about it.

I wanted to retain all the stock pieces so cutting a big hole in the airbox was not an option. I do wash my car (not neccesarily at the car wash) and we do get sudden downpours here in Chicagoland.

The aluminium mesh does not restrict airflow (no appreciable difference with or wo the mesh). It just keeps all the garbage out (leaves, road debris) from getting to the K&N filter.

What did you think of the aluminium grill in the blower intake?

No flame intended, but assuming you're more concerned about keeping junk out of your engine than out of the filter, why use a K&N/BMC in the first place since their filtering ability is inferior to the oem Porsche paper? Especially since there's no measurable power gain.

Thanks for the post, I read through the thread. Maybe I'll go back to the OEM filter.

However, my primary reason for replacing the cover was for the "Throaty" sound. Especially when I hit 5000 RPM and the Varioram does its thing.

There are also several threads around drilling holes in the existing cover (you could always buy a new one to keep as stock)...I've been considering that myself, only for the throaty sound.

I have seen 3 versions total:
Complete cutout like yours
Nickel or quarter sized holes
Pencil or dime sized holes (more of them, obviously)

No idea at all as to relative merits, but not kidding myself on any added horsepower...I'm only expecting 50-60% increase <img src="graemlins/burnout.gif" border="0" alt="[burnout]" /> <img src="graemlins/roflmao.gif" border="0" alt="[hiha]" />

Sachin:

After looking through at the other pictures, I can see how the cover works. The first picture looks like it covers the box completely. The second and third pictures provide a different angle of the box. It would definitely keep away debris and rain.

As far as the blower screen, looks cool. <img src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" border="0" alt="[cheers]" />

Thanks RT7.

BTW, If anyone wants the blower screen, I can make these for $15 in polished Aluminium and $20 in polished SS.

I posted this before, but here it is again. It doesn't have a rain shield, but it's virtually free.
