Question Shifter Inlay

Anyone out there know how tho remove the shift **** inlay? Mine is worn and I would like to refinish it with a metal coating process.

I would assume it's easy. Coincidentally I am also looking to replace mine, and found a site that sells them:
http://www.type-911.co.uk/ac_carinteriors.htm

Look down in the 993 section for the correct inserts. Never heard of this company, but they ship internationally. I'm going to try them out.

Unless, that is, some Rennlist sponsor sells these, but seeing as this post sat all day, I'd assume not.

kezcapt - it just pops out with a small screwdriver, but you need to be carefull or you will mess up the insert or the top of the ****. When I replaced my boot several months ago, I took the insert out and repainted it black, then painted the gear pattern silver with a little bitty brush. It looks 100% better, but I too have been looking at those metal inserts. the ones I saw were on ebay, but looked similar and were also overseas.
Troy - let us know how that insert looks if you get one.

Does anyone know if it's the same shift-**** insert for the OE rootwood shifter? I'd like to replace mine, as well. Troy, when you get the insert, let us know how it looks and fits. Thanks!

Edward

Talking Thanks

Thanks Crimson,
I thought as much but I was concerned about leaving tool marks. I will try to use brass or similar soft metal tools. I will be using an electrolytic zinc coating process from Eastwood so i will let you know how it goes.

the silver, pebbled texture shifter insert is actually plastic. (if you're talking about the same one i'm thinking of.)

As you can see, i messed this this one up a little trying to get it out. Note how substantial the retaining tabs are and you can imagine the prying force necessary to pop it out.

Edward, I think the wood shifter has a different insert (I had my wood shift **** and a standard C4s **** side by side and they look different). I'm also not sure how the wood **** insert can be separated - it appears to be glued in there permanently.

Default will do!

I'm placing the order tomorrow, and will post pics of the part and as installed when it's done. Since I'm replacing it anyway, I won't worry too much about not tweaking the insert, but will be careful of messing up the ****, thanks!

Default Got 'em

The company above turned out to be pretty good, I got the inserts in < 1 week. It's definitely not Amazon.com, or Gert, it was all one-way communication, never heard back from them, I would just one day have a package.

Note I said insertS. I ordered the alloy/carbon version and didn't like it that much, so I ordered the alloy version. You can see pics of the inserts on that site, but I have pics of the installed (if you could call it that) inserts. Looks like I need a new shift ****, it looks a little worn, huh?

this one is actually flat on top

this one is convex on top, like the stock piece

I still have the alloy/carbon one if anyone's interested. Maybe it would look better in a dark interior.
