speaking of favorites, and empty roads, click on 'the cars" in my signature and scroll down to the second last picture and click on it. Somewhere in Nevada, and it was all mine that early morning! max

I've gotta add one more.......The autobahn from Frankfurt airport to Stuttgart.....or if you're not in a hurry, the Romantische Strasse, ends up at the same destination, the Porsche Factory!

My vote: Ohio's Rt. 26. Also listed on Car and Driver's 10 best driver's roads in the country. More than 30 miles of sheer driving heaven. I have found this road is popular with other car clubs including Honda S2000's, BMW owners, etc... Any fan's here?
I've yet to take my new 993 for a spin on her, but I'm sure it will be love at first drive.

Rt. 26 is in Southeastern Ohio. It starts in Marietta and runs north all the way to I-70.
If you're interested I will be going down with a group of Ohio S2000 owners around the end of May and again in the fall. I led them down last fall in my Civic and they fell in love with the road. Can't wait to get the 993 down there. They won't snub you just because you've got a P-car.
I would love to take a group of Porsche's down as well, but haven't gotten involved with any fellow owners yet.
Here's a link to the discussion about our drive last fall. Page 3 is where you start to see the post drive reviews, pic's, etc...

Here's one of the pic's. We had a total of 13 S2K's and my lowly Civic.

The N138 in France, South past it's junction with the N23 down to a little village called Mulsanne.
It's one way for a whole weekend in late June every year, so a few lucky people can let there p-car's off their leash.
I've driven it on the Sunday evening and Monday morning after the race in my p-car. Most of the barriers, braking boards etc are still in place and it feels very special indeed.

There are too many beautiful roads out there.... I don't remember the exact names of a few, but the ones that stick out in my mind:
The roads entering and exiting Yellowstone Nat'l Park, especially the one exiting to the northeast... I drove that road one night, no one out there but myself, my friend and the critters - almost every other turn was a hair-pin. And boy was I glad I tried it at night - seeing what the road looked like in daylight, maybe I wouldn't have been so bold.
Of course, RT 1
Blue Ridge Pkwy. - especially the southern portions are amazing... just about 1 1 2 lanes wide with constant turns with an occasional 1/4 straightaways... not many gas stations to go around... so you drive your p-car hard enough and you might just run out of gas... definitely plan ahead...
And for those high speed runs, I-10 between West Texas and Arizona - Long lonely stretches of roads with a reddish hue, where on a good day you can almost see 50 miles ahead of you (good for spotting our friendly officers with their reflective windshields sitting out there in the blaring sunlight)
I've driven cross country soo many times and seen soo many awesome roads, but alas they weren't in a porsche, but soon enough!

Unfortunately, my choices are limited to roads that I have traveled, of course.
In the SF Bay area, we have a coastal range that separates the Bay from the Pacific. The spine of the range is paved forming Highway 35. This stretch of road continues for ~20 miles. Along this stretch or winding road, you can see views of San Francisco, SF Bay, Pacific ocean, Silicon Valley as well as countless miles of rolling hills.
Many of you recall Pin's photos...well, his inspiration, in part was drawn from this stretch of pavement!

Great thread. There are so many fine roads, but, to me, the problem these days is finding a road that is not too crowded to excersize the Porsche. My local favorite is lime creek road. Miles of tight turns, followed by short stretches of so-called straights, then hard on the brakes for the next tight turn. All of that, and nice scenery too. For high speeds, almost any road in southern Utah. Breathtaking scenery, low traffic density and lovely roads.

Pat,
When were you in the area? I left in ~92. My mom still lives in the area so I go down any chance I can and sneak a drive.
I tried to email you but was blocked. We can take this reminiscing off-line if you like. My profile is setup to accept emails.
You'll have to come back out and take a trip down memory lane.
