speedraser - i'm not sure what you are trying to say, i am all about the p-car fraternity...but, you have to admit there are some exceptions to the rule.

esb97,
I'm saying two things:
1) Your co-worker makes me cry.
2) I wave/flash at all Porsches, and my experience has been that, in general, the older cars are far more likely to wave/flash than the 986s and 996s -- I think that a greater proportion of the older cars are enthusiast-driven.

Further, my recollection is that many 993s were bought new by true enthusiasts. To a great degree, I think the 993 avoided suffering from the "I liked the older car better" syndrome we're all familiar with. Nonetheless, certainly many people also bought them new purely for the pose factor. Obviously, many enthusiasts also buy new 986s and 996s, though the number of non-enthusiast owners of these seems quite large.

I can honestly say I did not have the foresight (that the next 911 would be a 996) or the money to buy a 993 new. However, now that I have the means, I have the car that is the best representation of Porsche to me.

BTW, how many of you bought your 993 new and how many bought used? Another interesting question would be how many "upgraded" into a 993? I did from a 964 Cab.

Yes, only a few Boxter and 996ers respond.
They haven't learned the strictly enforced law that
all P-car owners must acknowledge each other,
or be subject to a $10,000 fine!

Are we snobs?

Yes we are, and we should be proud of it!

Hey guys,

I'm a Porsche owner, and I always wave no matter what model the P-car is. Don't feel bad if 996 or Boxster owners don't wave to you though. They don't wave to me either!!!

Olav,
Oh come on!! Should I not have assumed that was covered by "914"? Anyway, 914/6 owners probably have a very high wave/flash rate -- sweet car.

Todd,

Do you ever see any other Morgans? Do you wave to each other?

I had a pause in P-car ownership between my '87 911 and 993 (I drove an M3 - incredible car, but not a 911). My 993 was pre-owned as a garage queen. I keep planning on buying a commuter car (like I had with my past Porsches) but can't seem to accept NOT driving the 993. I live close to work so commuter mileage is minimal (current mileage is only 38k).

I always wave at porsche owners (had a woman in a boxster return the wave this morning, and a man in a black 996 cab on the freeway wave back yesterday), but had a weird thing happen earlier this week . . . I was in a suburb and a Cayenne drove past me.

Like a pavlovian dog I saw the porsche crest and immediately my hand went up to wave . . . but I then stopped a bit and wound-up with a half-hearted wave at best. I don't think the driver even noticed me.

I realize its a porsche, I understand why porsche has built it, but I can't deny feeling odd about waving to an SUV. I know some owners are enthusiasts that probably have another porsche in the garage, but I can't help but feel most have never driven a porsche sports car. I dunno -- is this a situation of 'you salute the rank, not the man' or what? I'll probably wind up waving, but its still weird at the moment.

I have waved to all Porsches in the past... 911's, 914's, 944's, 928's, 964's, 968's, 993's, Boxsters, and 996's. I have gotten responces from the same guy in a Boxster twice, and once from a lady in a 996 cab. Aside from those two people all others just look stunned or show an eat $hit and die look.

IMHO, the older the car, the more likely the driver is an enthusiast. There are not many people looking for basic transportation that are willing to put up with some of the quirks and expence of older Porsches. A lot of the drivers of the newer cars are just in it for status and transportation... others are true enthusiasts of the marque. As the 996 and Boxsters age the percent of drivers that are true enthusiasts will increase and the status seekers will have moved onto the next big thing...

My name is Sloth and I drive a 996. <img border="0" alt="[bigbye]" title="" src="graemlins/xyxwave.gif" />

Damon,

Other than at car shows/Morgan club events, sighting another Morgan is extremely rare. On those very rare occasions, however, generally the other Morgan driver and I both become temporarily insane. It's hard to describe the level of animation that can occur . Instant u-turns are often part of it if we were going in opposite directions. Sometimes we both turn around, and... Like a dog chasing its tail .

The wave rate is generally very high among old sports cars -- MGs, Healeys, Triumphs, Jaguars, Lotuses, etc. all wave to each other far more often than Porsches, in my experience. I'm probably more likely to get a wave from a 356 if I'm in the Morgan than if I'm in either 911. Actually, most cars from the '60s back to the beginning of cardom wave to each other.

That's very cool Todd. Personally I've always wanted a late 60's 911.
