Question In Dash Video

I am looking to install an in-dash video unit for GPS (Alpine makes a few) and such but was not sure if the screen will hit the dash when it flips up. Anyone using one of these?

Do a search as this has been discussed before. Mounting the unit in the stock radio location will result in the screen hitting the dash. Your options are to either notch the dash and make a cutout (a rennlister has done this and has posted pics); or install the optional center console (which has a mount for a cell phone) that has room for the monitor. Good luck and post pics if you decide to do this.

I think David was referring to my modification:

Graham, that looks great, thanks! Did you just block off the vents?

Graham, I think I like your install even better than the Techart approach, which probably involves a lot more cutting and custom work ...

The viewing position of yours is probably better/safer as well.

Anyone know if you can plug external audio/video into those LCD units?

It would be cool to jack my camcorder into the head unit and watch autocross/driver's ed video right there in the pits!

I have done such installs with all of the alpine flip-out video pieces in porsches. The bottom line when installing these units in this application is the understanding that you are going to lose the airvents. If you remove the center vent cluster, you can slide the mounting sleeve in the opening, with very little work. The end result is very user friendly and the screen location higher on the dash is a big plus. Also this now frees up the oem din location for an in dash DVD player or navigation drive.

How does blocking off the vents effect the AC?

The heating/cooling functions all seem to work, but obviously through fewer vents.

can anyone tell me what is involved in gutting out the air vents to make way for a flip screen.
And can this be reversed when i decide to sell the car. is it just a matter of poping it out or do you have to cut it out?

thanks,
