Default officially in mourning

It is with real sadness that my beloved 993 is traded for a 996 that arrives next week... it has not been done lightly and after weeks of deliberating I'm still not sure I've done the right thing, I only know that the miles are too high and I want a car I can use (without feeling guilty) more than just weekends and the occasional evening... maybe driving the 993 feels too special to me and I want to keep it that way....

So before I say goodbye forever I like to share the things that make this car unrepeatable and perhaps remind fellow fans why these ones are so special to us:

The sense of occasion as soon as you hear the unique sound of the door handle clicking
The exposed screws on the dash reminding you the whole car's made from solid rock
The sound of the engine starting up in an enclosed garage on a cold morning
The engine note changing as varioram does it's stuff
That jaw dropping shape, from any angle
The feel of the road through.. well everything!

I could go on but I'd probably cancel the new car and upset the dealer. I blame Porsche for not going straight from the 993 to the 997!

I will never understand why people get rid of their 993, knowing fully in advance of the withdrawal and regret certain to set in. Who cares about high miles? Will driving a low-miles 996 be any more fun? Will repairing it once the warranty expires be any cheaper? Does a 996 look better than 993? Does a 996 sound cooler? Why do people do this to themselves? Every week someone posts some sob story here about getting rid of their 993 and rarely, if ever, is it due to some emergency or dire circumstance. Why? I will probably never get rid of mine and if I do, it will be to make room in the garage for other air-cooled Porsches.

Kennyboy,
I am baffled. Why do you talk like you do about the 993 and then go out and order a 996?
Why not cancel and go for a 997? Who cares about upsetting a Porsche dealer? If you really want to move on, IMHO the 997 is the only way to go. Me, I'll stick with my 993...

Cancel the 996 order now. As soon as you drive it off the lot, you will be taking an incredible loss in value. Nobody's gonna want em now. They will end up at bargain basement prices. Tell the dealer you want a 997 instead or just cancel and look for a better 993 than what you had, i.e. low miles or whatever turns you on.
Don't do it, you will kill yourself.

KennyBoy, you should be happy. You are still in the 911 ranks! I went from the 993 S to 996 C2 6 months ago and it took a while to come to terms with the animal. Sure some things are not 100%, feeling in doors but most of all engine howl in low (and high revs) (I had a very special exhaust on my 993...).
The 996 will grow on you. It is a fantastic car.

Sorry, as great as 996s are, having driven plenty there's no way I'll sell the 993 for one. Just so saniitised and quiet in comparision, much softer too. 993s a keeper for me (at the moment!)

Cheers, Al.

Kennyboy-

How many miles are on you 993?. I would think that if it has that many, (80, 90, even 100K), then you wouldn't be so concerned about resale value, etc. and would even drive it more. I would hate to see you do something that you will regret.

I also agree with Alan. If the miles bother you that much look for another with lower miles. Perhaps move up a couple of years also, (98').

I have the same concerns with my 96' (58K miles). But think the car is just too special to part with.

Good Luck
Mike

It's got 66k miles Mike and is in fantastic condition throughout... can't dissagree with anything people have posted here but the time has come.. it went yesterday anyway as I promised dealer they could have it on forecourt whilst mine is being readied.

it's a used 996 (2001 C4), can't afford a 997 yet and thought this would be nice half-way-house...

anyway I can always get back in to a 993 S or something in the future - so few '98 cars in the UK these days, all getting snapped up!

thanks for the comments and 'dont do it's' boys but it's done now.

"I want a car I can use (without feeling guilty) more than just weekends and the occasional evening... "

Kennyboy,

My appreciation for my 993 went up 10 fold when I started using it as a daily driver. It is a beautiful car, and is NOT fragile or temperamental in any way. (I am not implying that the 996 is.) It can take whatever I can dish out on a daily basis and more, and gives me enormous satisfaction every time I drive it. Furthermore, I don't see why a 993 wouldn't go 200K miles on the original engine with normal maintenance. Also, the majority of the depreciation has already occurred, so trading 'down' to a 996 doesn't make financial sense.

If you prefer the 996 to the 993 for some reason then go for it. But the reason you stated is a little thin. JMHO.

Hell, I just passed 136K miles in my 97 turbo and think it is just about broken in...
