Post Turns over, sputters, doesn't start

My '96 was difficult to start twice yesterday. It started fine in the morning, then would not start after sitting at my office for a couple of hours. The engine tried to start on the first try but did not catch. It then turned over, but nothing else. Waiting a few minutes between tries and it would briefly catch, but not run. Finally, I waited 15 minutes and it did catch and run fine.

Later in day, it started fine, then after grocery shopping I had the exact same scenario as above. Ideas? Could it be the 91 octane gas??

Thanks,

bp

Sounds like the DME relay, search the archives for DME relay. Only a $20 part, very easy to change.

Check the part number on your relay, Bill. It's located at position 53 in your fuse box. Apparently, the older 944 relay used in early production 993s is prone to failure.

You can order the newer #993.615.227.00 from Suncoast for $13.26. Several board members recommend keeping a spare in the car.

Hopefully, this is the problem.

Thanks for the suggestion guys. I’ll check out the relay. I saw this noted in another thread, however, it had to do with a car that was turning over and not catching at all.

Regards,

New DME is definitely a must. I just checked mine and it is a 944 type. And the car was just checked during a PPI and no mention of this was made. Sad.
