i have been having some cel issues and i was sick of bringing the car to the shop every time (takes a lot of time and can cost some $ as well). so, to try to do a little diagnosis myself i thought i would get myself a code reader. anyway, bought the auto xray ez-reader 1000 for $149 at kragens and it seems to work well. plugged it in, it gave me the error codes and a little description of what they were, and then allowed me to reset the cel myself...i figure it will pay for itself over time (depending on how many times the cel lights up). anything alarming and i would leave the fault and drive it to the mechanic...
