I'm told that the ECU in the 1996 993's cannot be reprogrammed or upgraded. I've been advised that I need to get a 1997-1998 chip and then (and only then) that new chip can be reprogrammed. Does anybody know where I can get a 1997 to 1998 ECU and how much it will cost? In addition, a company called Powerchip (I've used them on my M5 with good results) claims to be able to reprogram a 1996 99 ECU. Does anybody have any thoughts or comments regarding the Powerchip claims or on how they would go about upgrading a 1996 ECU? Thanks

Mark,
I have Power Chip in my M5 and have great results as well. I spoke with Wayne of Power Chip re Porsche (as I have a 1995) and he told me that they do a piggy back chip on the OEM one and will be able to program them that way. He says that there are plenty of non-believers out there, but it works. I have a lot of faith in Wayne and PC. I'm talking to them about doing an one-off chip for my RUF.
I think you should call them to be sure about your situation. It couldn't hurt. Please share what you learn.
Good luck.
