Post translating my transmission code

i did a couple of searchs here, but couldn't find the info for which i was looking...sorry if this has been covered...

i have a 1996 C4 and i am trying to figure out what kind of transmission i have. line 3 of the vehicle id sticker reads:

M6423-64T G6420- 20

the first number is the engine code. the second is the transmission code. i am not sure if i have the lsd/bds combo. some posts indicate that all C4s from '96 have it, but others refute that (and i don't know). when i rotate one rear wheel the other rotates in the opposite direction (indicating spider gears and no lsd) but the original showroom sticker (which i have!) lists lsd/bds "as standard equipment at no extra cost" (though that doesn't actually state the car has it, and it could be a mistake i supose as well). if someone could point me to a resource where i could look up the tranny code and get a definitive answer i would appreciate it.

thanks!

On the bottom of the gearbox maincase there is a number stamped into the lowest 'web'. Should read, in your case G64-20 with a suffix 01 or 02 (maybe just 1 or 2). 01 is an open diff and 02 is LSD, IIRC..

The LSD still has spider gears just like an open diff, just the LSD has clutches on both sides, which add friction to the assy. locking up based on outward pressure applied from the spider gear/diff ramp assy.

Even though one tire spins the opposite direction (with car in gear) doesnt necessarily mean you dont have LSD. Just that it is more than likely worn and lost some of its preload. With proper clutchpack preload, and car out of gear, the tires should spin the same direction.. Also, with car in gear and a 'tight' diff, tires will spin the opposite direction, only with a lot of resistance.

Hope this helps..
