Post Replace Cab Top

My 98 cab has a small slice in the cab top. (I have a digital picture but cant figure out how to attach it to a post). Its a slice along one of the rails over the back window. First of all, does anyone know if these things can be repaired without having to completly replace the top. The top is in real good shape otherwise. Second, If I do have to replace the top, the P-dealers say about $4K to do it, some aftermarket guys say more like $2K and its as good as dealer. Does anyone have experience (good or bad) as to whether this is true. Thanks in advance.

Steve,

I am in the process of patching my top. The lady at Joan-Fabric told me to use rubber cement but i have been asking around for a second opinion.

Most after market shop quoted me for $1200-$1600. They use original fabric which i heard is not as strong as after market. The main difference is the window being sewn in instead of heat sealed.

I have the same problem with my 1995 Cab as there is a tear in the fabric along that bow just above the rear plastic widow. I put a patch over it but it looks bad. I did a sloppy stich job as when I used cement the wind kept lifting the patch. As far as the plastic window being cemented versus sewn I would rather have a 964 sewn window anyday over the glued 993 window as the latter glue softens under the summer heat and water leaks past the loose glue and travels down past the cab top dual motors and stays under the carpets in the rear seat wells. The interior liner hides the water leaks entry points.

I've read a new Cab fabric can be replaced while leaving the actual cab top mechanics all in place. Looks like an 8hr job though and I think thats where the $$$ comes in.

I looked at my 993 rear window and it appears to be zippered in.
