I think you are missing the point. No other car has to protect the engine from dirt and stones on the bottom. It is for noise requirements. The 996 doesnt need it since the water keeps it quiet. Just happens to protect the engine at the same time. MIne has been off for 18 months (since the day I bought the car) and not one rock chip back there. Have to be a pretty big rock to hurt the bottom end of the motor.
