Question Sunroof interior panel - need help.

Anyone know how to remove the interior sunroof panel?
I need to reattach the rear (NOT the easily accessible front) of the sunroof headliner.

The rear pulls out completely during track events. I presume driving at speed w/windows open creates low pressure in the car which sucks out the headliner. It's fine in normal driving.

Is this a DIY or something best left to the dealer?

Before anyone makes the suggestion - it's not included in my semi useful 993 shop manual.

Dan

When I had a problem with the sunroof / headliner, the dealer started scaring me with quotes of hundreds of dollars to fix - maybe seeing my shock they advised me instead to find an automotive trim specialist, which I did, who fixed it perfectly for just $75 or thereabouts.

You might check around for a trim guy - I notice you are Midwest - if anywhere near Detroit, I used Paul's Trim in Pontiac on 248 334-9936. Usual disclaimers, no affiliation, yada, yada.

Phil - The Pelican link was helpful. Thanks. I followed it & popped the leading edge free. However, the sliding panel is larger than the opening, slides in a track & I can't figure out how to remove it except by bowing it a great deal & using force - neither of which seems right & could damage the part.

Still could use some guidance if anyone knows how to remove the panel.

Chris - Thanks for the suggestion, but I'm reluctant to let some yahoo loose in my car & I don't know of any Porsche knowledeable trim shops here. Detroit is pretty far from St. Louis.

Dan,

If you've managed to detach the front of the panel, then you're halfway there...

...go ahead and reattach the panel and retract the sunroof fully. Now, disassemble the windstop for the sunroof and completely remove all the components. This should leave only the tracks in place.

Now, **gently** close the sunroof 1/4 way, then detach the front edge again. close the sunroof to 1/2 way and slowly slide the panel forward out from the tracks THROUGH THE TOP OF THE ROOF. You may have to loosen the tracks a bit to allow them to raise above the roofline, I did. If so, it's a great time to place some felt beneath the tracks to head off any undesirable rattles that can arise from that area.

The key with all of this is to work slowly. It's all to easy to scratch the paintwork while disassembling a 911 sunroof. Ask me how I know .

BTW, if you were so inclined, you can now close the sunroof beyond its stops. Once it stops moving you can slide the roof right out of its tracks. This will give you acess to the cable assemblies. A snapped clip cut one of the cables in my case - which is what lead to the disassembly in the first place!

Hope this helps, Dan. Email me privately if you want to call me and consult tomorrow. (Sunday)

cheers,

sean
