I understand that the red paint used in 97 and 98 did not have a clearcoat over it.
Do the red cars of this vintage experience any problems with their finish, assuming the car is kept properly waxed. The reason I ask is red paint has in my past experience been known to oxidize very badly. It seemed that the car could be waxed and it would stay shiney for about two or three days and then it would go back to being completely faded. I had been told that the paint had and I quote "died". That vehicle was a 1983 burgendy Mercedes. This happened when the car was 11 years old but otherwise in perfect shape.
A lot depends on how the vehicles have been taken care of and if they have been garaged, run in all weather, etc. But I picked up my Guards Red 97 993 Cab and although it was looking rough when I got it, I worked on it and it came around. You may want to look for yourself as there is a history of it at http://p-car.com/porsche/garycable/. One thing I like about the non-clear coat vehicles is that it seems easier for color matching. The Gemballa wing I put on my 993 was a snap to match compared to some of the base coat/clear coat painted wings I have seen. Besides, if you like red, go for it!
For the record I have a red '88 Nissan Pickup truck. This truck has been outside all its life. I've also manged to keep wax on it, and the paint is in suprisingly good condition. Perhaps there are waxes that have enhanced UV protection.
