Post Broken door check strap

At 14,000 miles, my driver's door has developed an annoying click when opening/closing due to a broken door check strap. According to 911 & Porsche World's 993 buying guide, this is a relatively common problem. They state:

"Although the replacement is cheap, you have to remove the door to fit it, so expect to pay up to $573 to have the problem rectified."

Has anyone fixed this as a DIY project? If not, what types of costs were involved? Appreciate the help.

Remembered there were posts on the subject from the 993/996 Board, as well as on this Board.
Found these threads:

Door Strap

Check-Strap on door '97 993S!

and pretty sure there were others, but they may have been earlier than the start of the old archives.

Odd problem at such low miles - obviously shouldn't happen in a Neon, much less a $100k car. I guess we should all be careful when we swing our doors open.

Thank you, Dan! Somehow, I didn't remember seeing old posts on this subject.

I had this happen on my 86 carrera. I fixed it in about 15 minutes, with out welding. I drilled a hole slightly above the broken weld above the hinge (drilled thru the body and the hinge plate) and slightly below the weld below the hinge. I then installed two pop rivets (don't use aluminum rivets, I used stainless steel). I touched up the tops of the rivets with a bit of touch up paint. Its a cheap solution and it works.

Anir:

I had a broken strap fixed on my 1998 C2S two months ago. I am the 2nd owner, and the cost to me was $0.00--covered under Porsche goodwill no questions asked (I did not have an extended warranty).

Talk with your local dealer...I believe they will cover your fix (it is a body shop repair involving cutting a into the doorjam, re welding the strap, and repainting a small area on the jam)

Good luck.

Anir,
The local dealer ended up fixing mine for free, too.
