Dan,
thats the best idea I"ve heard yet.
Steve, you can always check the bid history link and see who else is bidding, but Dans right, if your not careful somebody at the last minute will outbid both of you!! Its happened to me on a few occasions.

With all due respect...

This practice, contacting another bidder and collaborating on bid placement, falls under eBays "Transaction Interference" regulation for buyers. If you don't believe me, or you don't think they enforce it, please PM me. I only offer the advice as a warning to my fellow rennlisters.

I too don't think eBay does a particularly good job of policing their community, esspecially with respect to scams. Trust me though, you don't want to be caught on the wrong end of their enforcement policy if they do come knocking, particularly if there is a record of what you were doing somewhere....

cheers,

sean

How rare is this 'find' anyway?

No offense, but if anyone wants me to test drive a Boston/NH/RI car just send me a nice bottle of wine

Being that we have similar cars in color I mean I may be bidding on the same thing you are also. I am actually bidding on 3 things right now. Is the item your bidding on for looks or performance. That norrows it down quite a bit, I personally don't really care if I get any of the 3.

The item I'm bidding is for looks only, not performance, and is virtually impossible to buy anywhere else at any price. Thanks everyone for your response. Others are now bidding on it, so I guess it's fair game. Still awaiting an email from the other gent, as I might just make a crazy bid at the last moment to "secure it" as mine if I don't hear from him and his intentions.

Peace,
Steve

"Fair game"?

Two questions for you:

What would you have said if he went and test drove the car for you, realized it was a great deal, and bought it for himself?

Why did you post the question, on what is the right thing to do in this situation, in the first place?

About a year ago I had a guy clip me in the last 5 seconds on a Porsche watch. A day later he emailed and said, Hey I do know you from the Rennlist. That was it. I was a little bent that he emailed me at all. I would rather he not bothered. Anytime I notice someone from our list and he has bid I will email him and chat. Usually we figure out who wants it more. Most times I will not bid. This is my opinion but it has to do with respect. I wouldn't blast one of my pals and that is how I look at it. Several people have done the same with me recently and I appreciate it.

The same holds true for members of our community that post "check out this link on e bay" when they are not the seller. Chances are there are a couple of us here bidding, all of the sudden the innocent post of "check this out" turns several hundred other bidders on to a item that may have been flying below the radar. Case in point, the carbon fiber hood last week, I had first bid, Princeton asked a question about quality, not "check this out" but now the cat is out of the bag... By the way, Princeton was kind enough to e mail a response to a question as he saw it in person and gave me the low down as to the quality. It kept me from bidding any further. My point is, it is only doing a service to the seller to all of the sudden turn several 100 potential buyers on to their sale... Princeton's post was cool, others are not... Rant off.
By the way, Mike in Chi post was spot on!!!

I agree with Mike in Chicago, too.

Unless, of course, you plan on securing it to give to your Rennlist buddy.

Is it a gold-plated front protection bar?

Mike,

Happy you're amused!

I figured I'd keep on using the fpb joke until it's died an agonizing death into the ground. That time may be now...

Alright, Mike. I catch your drift. I'm taking myself out of the running. Here's the link for the item, if this works:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=6775&item=2405478346&rd=1

I've been lusting over these OEM C4S door sills ever since I saw them on a 97 C4S that I didn't buy because the owner wouldn't meet my price of $52500 . He went down to $54600 from $56k, from $61k months before... but the wife said $52500 was the most I'm allowed. The oddest thing is that the owner JUST emailed me a couple of days ago that now he's ready to sell it to me, for $52,500! I practically begged him to sell it to me, month after month, as it was a sweeeet local car and had only 25k miles on it. Oh well, it wasn't mean't to be. I do love my C4S and I save quite a bit by buying a higher mileage car.

This is what a rennlister gent emailed me about these door sills. He was kind enough to remember that I wanted these door sills weeks ago and sent me the link to the ebay auction through private email the other day:

"installing used sill plates is possible as long as they are not bent or distorted in shape from being removed. frankly, i don't how they could not be bent as the adhesive that secures them is so strong.

used sills maybe more difficult to install if you have to remove the adhesive from the used sills and your car body. double the work as new sills as the new ones would not need the old glue removed. you would have to buy the two-sided adhesive tape from the dealer or some 3M products seller. that would be cheap. real hassle, though to install. you might check the seller's prior feedback on ebay to see if he has any negative feedback. i suppose i would believe him that the sill plates are not bent or distorted.

i would not use silicone to secure the plates. the old double sided tape should be removed and new tape used. these sill plates must lie flat aganst the painted car body and having the old (useless) tape strips plus silicone might raise the sills too much and cause a problem elsewhere such as interfering with the weatherstrip, the door opening and closing, or catching clothing on a corner as coats and dresses slide along the plate edge.

as stated before, the time to remove the adhesive can be significant if you want it all off and do not want to scratch the car paint. plus you are working while kneeing down for hours. it's tedious. i'll probably take a
full day to install these if you have the adhesive, a couple strong plastic spatula, and the double-sided tape. given the work involved, however, as I said before, I would seriously think about this as the black looks just fine
as well."

Steve
