Post Failed Inspection For OBDII Test

My 1997 993 failed inspection for the following:
Catalyst: Not Ready
Evap: Not Ready
2nd System: Not Ready
02 Sensor: Not Ready
02 Sens Htr: Not Ready

The battery did die over the winter and was replaced. After reading the archives which said to drive the car at 55 mph for 15 minutes on two separate occasions, it still failed for the same problems (the two separate occasions were 15 minutes apart). I also read in the archives that the ECU may need to be updated. Has anyone had their ECU updated for this reason?

Thanks for any help.

Jim,

I'm the one who had a similar problem that was induced by a battery disconnect.

I coordinated the 'driving' solution with John Gladwell at Boardwalk Porsche. He read the codes after my first run - then again after the second run - and there was a stubborn code that he was able to toggle with his OBDII to get it to set.

I'd suggest talking to John about your problem - he may have some more insight.

Good luck!

Ben

Hi Ben
Thanks for the info. So, you initially failed the second time too but John was able to manipulate the codes? Sounds like a good idea to bring it to Park Place (also just in case it needs ECU updating).

Thanks again for the help!

Take a search through the archives on "emissions". I had a similar problem right after the brand new (at least to GA) OBD2 testers came out in the middle of last year. The "solution" was to take it to my local dealer where they knew about the problem and did a reprogram. Since that time I have found out that there is no real driving procedure to reset the system, normal driving will do just fine.

I passed again this year with flying colors.

Oh, and the dealer covered it under the 7 year emissions warranty, so no bill.

Thanks for the additional information Chris. I have my 993 over at the dealer now and they know nothing about the re-program. Is there any additional information you can provide about the re-program or the name of your dealer and tech so that I can point my dealer to the upgrade?

Thanks
Jim

The dealer is Jim Ellis Porsche in Atlanta. When I get home I'll see if I have any other paperwork on it and post here if I do.
