Default windscreen creak and cure

Guys,

I'm writing to ask if you guys could help me out with a problem with my car. I've read about the cure you use for the dreaded windscreen creak and seem to be having the same problem with my 964 believe it or not . It seems this is virtually a first but over the last 6 months a REALLY annoying creak has started to develop from the front windscreen on the right-hand side (LHD car). Toatally related to bumps in road and its driving me mad. Had a new windscreen and new seals etc replaced last week but no cure. Can i retro-fit the rope (on a 964?) or use the teflon-based spray on my car. The screen was sealed/bonded in on my car as per the manu instructions. Would a liberal spray of the lube around the screen help. I understand its just the seal rubbing against the paint/screen surround? Would bike shops in UK sell the stuff?

Any help would be as its driving me nuts!

Cheers

Giles.

There's been some debate as to whether it's the seal rubbing against the paint, or the windshield frame rubbing against the body of the car. My feeling is that it's the windshield rubbing against the car, just judging by the sound it makes.

Anyway, if you can't locate Pedro's Ice Wax in the UK, your next best bet would be to find some 3M wet silicone lubricant and use that. Spray it liberally underneath the outside of the rubber gasket surrounding the windshield, let it settle in for a few minutes and then drive and see how it works.

Hope that helps. I know how annoying it can be.

Cheers,

best i could lay my hands on today is some rubber and nylon lubricant that claims to eliminate sqeaks and some silicone spray so will give them a try. I'd be surprised if its eliminated completely but here's hoping! My creaks came on over a few thousand k and now have new seals etc and checked the screen before fitting so hoping its seal on paint thats the problem. Seems unusual for a 964 unless its something in the dashboard!

I went to a dive shop and got a small tube of silicone for dive mask repairs.

Presto.. no squeeks.

Guys,

Well it appears the trick of spraying silicone sealant into the windscreen gap did'nt work for me so have the windscreen fitter coming tomorrow to work to have a look at it and try and see what he thinks. I've also ordered some of the teflon tape and foam rope to have to hand when he turns up in the hope that that may cure it but not counting my chickens. Short of removing the windscreen (which he wont do) its staring to look like a lost cause. I can hear and see where the prob is as you can see the screen moving more in the lower rh of the car if pressure is applied. here's hoping the rope trick works as its my last idea Other than that its a body shop and new (expensive) screen again! I hate Monday mornings

If you want to try one more inexpensive item, the Pedros Ice Wax is available at most bicycle shops in the UK (at least it was in the London area)

Can anyone show me (with the aid of pictures) where exactly this stuff needs to be applied, I get the sqeek from the rear screen and it drives me to distraction!

Default Here's a pic of the rear window

The arrows show where you should spray the lubricant. It's very easy to pull off the rubber gasket on all sides except the top where the brake light is. I simply followed the instructions on p-car.com on removing the brake light and removed the entire gasket. While I had it off I wedged in some of the foam rope. There's virtually no noise from the rear window (or the front for that matter) any more.

Hope this helps.

Giles, just curious...does your car have a strut brace? If not, I'm wondering if a strut brace, by stiffening the chassis and reducing flex, would have any impact on the squeaking.

exactly what i was thinking and have posted on the smartgroups site about The windscreen guys are getting back to me after looking at it again yesterday and if they cant find the source or cure then they said they will remove and refit a new screen. I can then drive with screen removed to check its def the screen rubbing. Trouble is that the 964 seal/design is different to the 993 with less of a channel for the foam rope insert or teflon tape but if they have to refit then perhaps the tape is a good idea whilst the screen is out. Lubricants of all sorts have made no difference so its the next logical step. I'll let you know how i get on but a brace may well be in the pipeline before or after.

Cheers.
