Question is the 993TT worth it?

Hello all
I have a question that I'd like your opinions on. I am considering trading in my 968 and 993 C2 on a 993TT. The question is, will I be happy with this trade or will I regret it. I have yet to drive the car, or a twin turbo for that matter so I cannot yet compare the driveabilities of it to the others. I also don't know what the common maintenance issues are on the 993 TT. Any advice is much appreciated.

Coming from a biased 993TT owner, I can say ABSOLUTELY YES, it's worth it. Of course, it depends on every individual's needs and desires. 400hp definitely gets your heart moving a bit faster. I smile everytime I fire her up. I'm always thankful that I'm one lucky guy to have one of these.

On the flip side, maintenance is going to be more expensive for sure. Everything will be more on a turbo. However, maintaining the two cars you have probably won't be much cheaper.

Go to <a href="http://www.993tt.com" target="_blank">www.993tt.com</a> for some excellent info on the car. Prices have never been better, so you're buying at the right time.

Good luck.

Depends what you want.

If you want a great street car and semi track car, than the TT is worth it.

However, if you are thinking that you'll be getting into track work, then you're better off with a purpose built car ( spec miata, spec racer ford, radical, etc )

I just realized that I pay around $1000 in insurance alone for my TT. Add in maintaince, tires, mods, etc, and you're looking around $3-5K per year.

I'm not really looking for a track vehicle. Both of my current vehicles are pretty much sunday drivers. And with the two of them sometimes one will sit for a couple of weeks between drives. The 993 is still fairly new to me. I bought it last year. the 968 I have had for years and its very dear to me. It lacks in power though and owning the C2 makes it even more obvious. But it is mechanically sound and it is my baby and I'm not sure that I want to part with it yet. What sort of things should I look for on the 993tt? I sure dont want to replace my babies with a lemon.

thanks

Driving differences between the TT and a NA 993, from my perspective, are:
1. Power (obviously)
2. Steering Feel (unless you are comparing to a C4)
3. Engine Noise
4. Clutch Feel

Drive 'em back-to-back and these differences are quite pronounced.

I wrote up a review previous <a href="http://forums.rennlist.com/cgi-bin/rennforums/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=3;t=006005" target="_blank">here</a>

If that link doesn't work, search under my user number (its around November of last year that I wrote the review).

There are a few differences between the model years, with 97 being the best. Not a deal breaker if it's a 95 or 96 though. But you just have other things to deal with. If you can get a car that does not need the wiring harness changed, I'd get that one. Many people ( both TT and NA ) have experienced werid things after the wiring harness upgrade.

I know of a few rennlisters who are selling theirs too. I can give you their contact info if you want.

Also, if there is a car that you are interseted locally, I can think of a few self appointed rennlist TT experts that wouldn't mind going with you to check it out.

I'd never go back.

I've always felt the n/a 993 (or when I owned my SC or Carrera)was underpowered. I always considered it a trade off to the 911's wonderful handling.

My bench mark for acceleration has always been my '91 corvette zr1 (375 hp, but handled like a speed boat).

When I first stretched the legs of my twin turbo the first time, it actually scared me a bit with it's fierce acceleration from 60 to 100 mph.

Now with the tt (which to me is actually faster in a straight line than my zr1) I finally get the best of both worlds, razor sharp handling and great acceleration.

Then there are the aesthetics of the wide body.

I just went through selling a 993na for a 993tt and they are two different animals with similar parts. You definitely need to drive a few. You also need to learn what your driving. Many of the 993tt I looked at were modified. The modifications were not done real well and ruined some of the cars I looked at (my opinion). But go get your hands on one and see what you think.

My experience has been that the maintenance issues with the TT are no different than any 993... steering rack, clutch slave cyl, etc. But then, my car only has 53,000 miles on it, so its not broken in yet.

Why not get one of those local TT guys to let you drive their car? I'd do it, if you lived down here. Hell, I think Hurley Haywood used my car to set the 0-60 mark of 3.6 secs, when PCNA owned the car, so what difference could it possibly make?

They feel so... "light" compared to the ones in NA cars. I realize they are mechanically different beasts but... That aside, the Turbos are wonderful!

Devvie,

Anyone who goes by "Devilgirl" and owns two Porsches is OK with me. You're welcome to try my TT anytime. Send me an email.

Devvie,

I like the lighter weight and rear-drive handling of the standard Carrera. The thrust of the turbo is, of course, very appealing. So far, for me, I don't feel compelled to get a turbo -- the only real advantage for me is that thrust. Truth is, I can do 0-60 in under 5 seconds and 168 mph with my 993 Carrera, so where am I going to use still more performance?

My car is plenty fast for the road -- I'd just be frustrated or in trouble (or both) with a turbo. As for the track: I reached the low 120mph range down the main straight at Lime Rock in my car (first time there, and my second DE). I rode with a well-respected instructor in his 993 turbo, and he reached about 130 in the same place. For me, 130 wasn't more fun than 123, since I wasn't going for the lap record. I really enjoy the corners, and they're at least as fun, IMO, in the rear-drive Carrera.

Unfortunately, we get used to the performance of our cars, seemingly no matter how fast they are (witness the number of go-faster mods people on this board make). When I got my 993 three years ago, I thought it was tremendously fast. It is, but I'm used to it now. I'd get used to the turbo's performance also after a while.

I'm very content, but that turbo still appeals... Drive one and decide.
