hi everyone,
I am about to enter the world of 993 ownership. The car I am looking at has a "classic grey" interior but there is a color difference on the front of the seats vs the sides and same for the steering wheel outside vs center. Is this a normal aging of the leather or does it point to a seat trim change at some point in its life? The side bolsters have significant wear so I do assume this would have been done long time ago.
First, I will say that I do not have classic grey. BUT, what I can say is that is typical of most 993s to have "partial" leather interiors where the seating surfaces are leather and the sides, backs of the seats are vinyl. I would expect that the leather has faded differently than the vinyl as seen on the wheel as well. The leather is easily re-dyed to bring it back to life. Many threads here on it.
My 95 grey interior looks just like yours, there are color differences between the vinyl and leather just like 95_993 says above. You can DIY the bolsters with leather conditioners to cover up the scrapes on the side, they will still remain but not as noticeable in your photo. Looks like this car is Arena Red, a very good looking color with classic grey. Welcome to the 993 world!
I would add it isn't just the seats and steering wheel that were not full leather, but the console, dash, door panels, etc. You can see those differences in the pictures as well. Unless you have a turbo (full leather interior) or the car was ordered with the upcharge full leather interior, this is going to happen. Especially the Classic Grey seems to be the worst. Cashmere next. Notice your steering wheel is not full leather either. The outside was leather but the airbag covers were leatherette, just like the rest of the car aside from the seating surfaces. That was the case with Turbos as well. The car had to be ordered with the full leather steering wheel (option X26, X28 or X30) in all of the cars, even the turbos. Only one that came std with the full leather steering wheel (X26) was the turbo S.
