Post 2 Porsches Instead of a 993

I have always dreamed about a 993. My favorite porsche of all time. I have reached a point of my life where I can finally afford one. I have a budget of around 40K, but in order for me to buy a 993, I need to sell my 911. It seems like the used car market sucks, and I have not got an responses about my 911. I want around $19,900 ( I think Its fair) but nobody seems to pull out the dough.

So I'm thinking with the extra 20K I have to spend, I might as well get a Boxster. These cars have takes a deep hit with prices. Now I I can have my 911, Plus a fun car like the Boxster. I can buy my 993 somewhere down the line in a couple of years.

I may have struck a deal to pick a 2000 Boxster with 41K for around $23,000. Do you guys think thats a good buy?

It is never a good deal to get your "second" pick. No clue if the price is good or not on the Boxster, check on their board.

If you've been dreaming about a 993, sit tight until the '88 sells. It took me a couple of months to sell my '85 Carrera, but I had it on Autotrader where it didn't cost any extra to keep on renewing the ad. Maybe your price is high for the miles or condition?

I'm no math expert but I don't see how an '85 Carrera + '00 Boxter = ANY 993. But I'm obviously biased since I've been down this road before.

Quality, not quantity.

OK,
Let me take the advocate position here. I think the Boxster is a fine car, probaly alot of fun for open top cruising, commuting and what a gorgeaous wide a@@!
Youve got a great example of a 911. If it's treated you well by now, be happy with that.
Dont get me wrong, the 993 is very good but a very different drive. Who knows, you may not like the more refined feel of the 993. It is very smooth which is probably why so many here on this board modify them so they feel, drive and sound more connected like your 911. Newer isnt necessarily better (look at our brethren with 996s). Just my opinion.

The price for the boxster seems very cheap are you talking about trading your car in and paying $23,000?? If not I had no idea the boxster was going for that much. That is a very small amount of money for that car. I have considered selling my 993 to use the extra money to buy a new house but I am still working on keeping it.

I would wait and get the car you want even though that seems very cheap. You will not be disappointed in the 993 at all.

All I can say is drive both, then decide yourself. Some like the Boxster feel, others prefer the 993.

I am probably biased, but if durability/reliabilty mean anything the 993 is my preferred choice.

I had similar problems selling my '84 Turbo-Look when I wanted to get a 993. Finally ended up buying a used 993 while I was still trying to sell my '84; took out a car loan when I normally don't do such. Few months later when the '84 sold I paid off the entire loan.

Agent325S,

First of all, I think that the Boxster is a fun car. Nimble and reasonably quick. But, unless you really want a second car, there are some 2-car issues to deal with, like where will you park it? Do you have the time (and energy) to maintain and clean both cars? Do you want the extra insurance and registration costs? For some, having a second car is a good thing. For me, it doesn't work so well. I'd get that 993 and just have the one car.

I'm with Silver Bullet, do you really want to live with two sports cars, unless one is a dedicated track car? I bought my 993 with thoughts of using my Mazda as a track only car, but the 993 is great on the track (and the street), I actually prefer it over the RX (except for horsepower). So now I'm stuck with the headache of two 2-seaters, two insurance payments, etc.

I would hold off on the Boxster, not because it isn't a great car for a relatively low price, but because you don't really have a use for one, unless the open air motoring really appeals to you.

Good Luck,

I just entered into 993 ownership and the car is being transported. I initially pursued getting a Boxster, then a Boxster S and then finally got what I really wanted, a 993. Last week I bought a 1995 C2 coupe with 39K for $32,000. The cars mechanic raved about the condition and an independent PPI verified it. The car was babied and is spotless. I think I got a great car at a great price. It took me awhile to find what I really wanted but I am thrilled I didn't jump at the first Boxster I almost bought. I think the Boxster is a great car but is not in the 993 league. The 993 will hold its relative value better than a Boxster or even a 996. That being said the price you quoted seems real low for a 2000 Boxster. You didn't mention miles or condition so its either a great deal or you better have it thoroughly checked out. Only you can decide if you want two different Porsches or wait and go with a classic. Good-luck.

Keep the 911 and get more mileage 993 around $30k.
Or wait for a while and then get the 993 (and keep the 911). Boxster is a great car but IMO it's not even close to any 911, and especially 993.

I recently sold my 911 (had that & 993 for about one year) because I couldn't use it much cince it was in my garage in Finland, every now and then, I still regret selling it.

Oh, and I find nothing wrong with owning two (or more) sports cars!

Drive both cars. Get the car you like. However you already seem like you would have a regret if you didn't get the 993. In that case. Get the 993. Wow these decisions are hard aren't they?

Seriously, get the car you REALLY want. You do not want to make a purchase and then keep kicking your butt about it later on.

My 911 has 113K, super clean in and out, so I dont want to sell it for less than I think I can get for it. If the boxster deals works out for around 20-22K, I'm gonnna buy it, drive it for the summer, then sell it, I might even make a little bit of cash selling it down the line.

Eventually I want to get a 4s or a turbo. To me the 993 is the ulimate porsche ( next to the 959 ). If I buy one now, what's there to look forward to down the line? a 997?

If you are a 911 guy -- and I take it you are by your 88 Carrera -- it's likely you will not be happy with the Boxster. I was not happy with my 2001 Boxster, as good as it was, and as fun as it was, the only time I didn't miss my 911 was when I was actually driving the Boxster. When I saw a 911, I would pine for it. But when I went back to a 993, I didn't miss the Boxster at all. It's not that it's not a great car, it's just not a 911. The sound, the aroma, the gauges, the visceral experience you get driving it. And the 993 is the best of the 911s -- if you're a 911 guy. I have no idea what the answer is if you're a 996 guy ;-)

99 C280 (for sale)

PS -- The difference between the 2.7 Boxster and the Boxster S is not nearly as obvious as the original Boxster and the S; to me, it's not worth the extra cash for the 6-speed and extra horses. If you were considering a 97-99 Boxster, I would think differently. Neither car is as fast or challenging to drive as the 993 anyway ... totally different car.

One thing to think about is that all Porsches are seeing a decline in resale value, including our 993, Boxster and 911's. Your price may seem fair to you but obviously it is high for the current conditions. With that being said, wait until you sell your 911 and get the 993 C4S.
