Hm interesting. Kinda sucks since thats a $40-50 part and the fact that your heater blower might get messed up.

How does that happen? The plastic used in that area is reasonably sturdy and pretty pliable (hard rubber?). Seems like it would somehow have to become brittle first.

Do you think prolong engine compartment heat from running hard on the track in our beutifull 150+ degree summer weather has anything to do with is? Have you used any detailing products ever on this? I have had the rubber door seals on my very old 924 turn like this when I was clueless and had applied some sort of cheap "protectant" on them. That is odd...

Is that your car Robert? I'll be putting on a heater bypass tube this week so I'll have one of those parts sitting around if you need it.

The exact same thing has hapened to me. I was very surprised. In fact I posted the same about a week ago and got a reply from Robin. He has seen this on 95 cars and it is not a serious problem.

Yep, happened on my '95. Bought a replacement from Pelican Parts for I think around $40? Was on backorder for about three weeks. I think Gert Carnewal has some in stock.

Thanks for everyone's replies. At first I was really befuddled at how part could have failed, as Princeton said, the rubber's still pliable. Then I started thinking somebody slashed it! Glad to hear it's a known failure item.

Princeton, I appreciate the offer! Only thing that crosses my mind is that if your car is about the same age as mine, perhaps your part is towards the end of its lifespan. Since the part isn't that much, I think I'll just throw a new one on instead.

Does someone have the official part # or name for this? I won't know how to ask for its replacement without that...

I believe the part number is 993 106 403 00 and is called the engine fan airduct.
Momentum has one in stock for ~ $45.

I accidentally touched the fan air duct while it was hot
and the part began to crumble. I temporarily attached
long lengths of high temperature Kapton tape to seal the
air leak until the replacement part arrived.

Forgive me for asking, but I can't tell from the photo where that part is located. Can someone shed some light?

When you open the decklid its in the dead center right above the engine cooling fan.

Ah... now I see it. Geez, that picture made the thing look HUGE and I just didn't make the connection. Given the heat in the engine bay, there's a part that should have been made with high temperature silicon instead of rubber.
